Really? Where’s your proof? Did you provide any? Nope, and that’s no surprise. You’ve pulled back your veil here rhad. Your behaviour in recent months makes sense now. You’re a bigot.
An extremely important point. To use Russia, for example, the ideology was to discourage going to church. Three generations later, atheism was highly prevalent. It's a meme, basically.
According to your own post (which I referenced above for everyone's enjoyment) it's "YOUR responsibility and nobody else's". Nope. It's remarkable to watch your arguments evolve from irrational nonsense to outright slander.
It's just their sense of pride and ego about their beliefs getting in the way. I suppose you could use Poseidon or some other long dead god in place of a unicorn to give them some sense of "stature", but logically speaking, there is no difference.
At the risk of inflaming this thread even more... Atheists and other non-believers I know and meet are not quite as prickish as some of you guys posting in here. If you are out in everyday life heaping scorn and ridicule upon things and beliefs that many hold sacred, the grief you get is not because you are an atheist. I do not need religion, nor a belief in god to make myself complete, nor provide a guide for living my life in a positive manner. However, I do not subscribe to the notion that denigrating others who seek fulfillment in religion or choose some other path are inferior, delusional, or deserving of derision. I admire quite a few posters in here, but the irony of this thread is that many of you sound as intolerant as the religion you rail against. Some of you might benefit from a reading of religious literature from a purely philosophical (not theological) level. I'll resist the urge to post some bible quotes containing common sense phiosophy for living a good life. rant over amen carry on wayward son
That could apply to some people, but a different choice of words with the same point could elicit a more honest response rather than a defensive one.
Agreed. Religious crazies declaring non-believers are going to burn in Hell for all eternity should be scorned. Atheism pushers that declare those who believe in God or follow a religion are idiots or somehow less intelligent should also be scorned in the same fashion.
I'd love to see you go into specifics on this one. I've seen a couple of lurkers make some really asinine comments, but for the most part, I don't see hardly anyone ridiculing people for seeking fulfillment or trying to be "good". What I do see is people playing by the rules of logic, and some that are not. I think your barometer for what qualifies as prickish behavior may be a little skewed. As finals put it so brilliantly, when you're a non-believer walking in the realm of the sacred, it's kind of hard to not look like an *******, whether you actually are or not.
Donny, you're one of the posters I admire in here, but if you think this quote has anything to do with logic, I think your logic barometer is skewed:
in defense of myself and my atheist brethren, this IS the D&D, and we ARE debating religion. isn't the debate supposed to get heated? it's not like any of us go around in real life always trying to rail against religion or instigate. it's a debaaaaate, we b**** at each other but if we met in real life we'd buy each other a beer and sing styx songs.
So you *don't* think people get defensive about their religions because of pride? And you *don't* think that the concept of Zeus has as much plausibility as any other religion? I fail to see the logic problem, explain please.
You don't think insinuating their beliefs are illogical is "prickish"? Or is your logic comment geared towards something else?
It is just redundant. If I mistakenly say "PPG per game" you can call me out on it, but that has nothing to do with my understanding of basketball. I think the idea he was expressing came across just fine. Do you have any criticism of the idea itself, or do you just want to nitpick the verbiage? Because that's all your response amounts to.
No, I don't think that calling something illogical (especially based on proof/evidence) is prickish. In fact, that is about the nicest/most accurate way you can really have a disagreement. If I told you I believed in something for which I had no evidence (or take a real example, like Grizzled's argument for example) and you said that was illogical, would that make you a prick? No.
