Why didn't we just get Collison and then trade Brooks?

He's better than Lee and that's what matters.

That is only a very small part of the battle.

First off, Collison doesn't play SG... aka, the main position where we lacked depth.

Second, you don't make a trade assuming you can get rid of Brooks for a "star" player. That's how you end up with upset players and low-ball offers from other teams.

Last, Lee is better than Jermaine Taylor... and that's what REALLY matters.

    I don't know about that...

They could have grabbed Collison, and let Lowry go, correct?

Lowry was re-signed by Houston a month before Ariza was traded.

    Yeah that hurts.

It was obviously a financial move, but from a purely basketball perspective, it hurts to lose out on a much better, more promising basketball player in a position of need.

Huh? How can they grab Collison without taking Posey's salary? Posey makes as much as Andre Iguadala, unless you have a ton of cap room just sitting there its like you're paying Collison 13M a year.

Posey makes 7 million for the next two years. Collison makes less than 2 million for the next two years. I think Collison would have been worth every penny, obviously Daryl didn't think so.

We could have turned Trevor's 5 year deal into Posey's 2 year deal.
We could have turned Jeffries expiring in to Collison plus one.

Or perhaps we could have simply grabbed Peja's expiring instead. The Hornets number 1 target was Ariza after all...

So you would have paid 9M for the next two years just to get Collison? I don't think a lot of GMs would have agreed to that, its a huge risk to take.

TA made the full mid-level, around 5.6M IIRC. As capped out teams we would have had to more-or-less match the incoming salary we would be taking in. 9M-5.6M, there's still 3.4M in salary that you would have include in trades. That means you have to give away more players just to make the trade match. The kicker is we're also paying the luxury tax, and this trade would have pushed us further up the tax line instead of below it. So you'd actually be paying 18M for Darren Collison. So to recap:

    1) You'd have give up another player to make salaries match
    2) You'd paying 9M in salaries
    3) You'd be paying a dollar-for-dollar fine for the 9M
    4) Collison is an unproven player.

What happens if Darren Collison turned out to be another Ramon Sessions, another player people were swearing up and down to be the next superstar before he was signed by the Twolves? You'd be stuck paying 18M to Ramon Sessions part two and you gave up useful players apart from Ariza in the trade.

Or, you could just resign Lowry to 5M a year, a deal that looks really horrible now but made all the sense in the world in the offseason.

Collison is another shooting guard in a PG's body. He's just a better shooter. Collison wouldn't make the Rockets a contender.

For all of you wanting to trade Brooks.... What makes you think that other teams actually want him? If so many people here want to trade him, doesn't that mean he isn't valuable to the team? And what makes you think other teams want someone who isn't valuable (and can't play defense)?
