Hakeem never could dribble in the open court. Yeah, you'll see him on a breakaway every now and then, but you'll see him kind of slapping at the ball instead of dribbling it, and you'll still see him looking at his hand as he does it. He was very raw his early years at UH.
If Phi Slamma Jamma could have hit a decent % of their free throws, they would have won the 1983 title.
He was raw, but I don't blame Dream for anything that happened during the Phi Slamma Jamma era. He did his part and then some. He almost had a triple-double in the championship game against NC State.
Your dad was right. Even before I opened this thread those where the words that came to my mind - Guy Lewis. I was attending UofH during those years and even though there are many Houston sports events that are infamous, none compare to that night. A total tragedy. Even Jim V said later in an interview that he gave his guys a go out and have fun speach before the game because he expected it to be a blood bath.
I bought a Phi Slamma Jamma white and red-trim jacket at the thrift store in '90... that's as close as I got...
