Why Did We Even Trade for James Posey If We Are Never Going to Play Him?

Have you people seen Denver's offense? Of course not, they don't HAVE an offense. That is the worst offensive team in NBA history, Rudy probably wants to flush that Denver waste out of his system. Seriously, it was stated that while coming here Posey was basically getting a crash course on the Rockets offense. This is a young team and the last thing they need is to just dump a new guy onto an already fragile team and have him disrupt things while learning the system. It wouldn't surprise me if he got significant minutes against the Jazz or the Knicks.

I don't know what this means, but the Rockets have gone to "Tiffany" 2 times, and have had 2 parades all under the helm of Rudy. People are quick to point out Phil Jackson's rings and forget that there are only 3 current coaches to have coached a team to consecutive championships at one point, Phil Jackson is obviously one of them having coached the Bulls and Lakers, Pat Riley is another having coached the Showtime Lakers, and Rudy is the other having coached the Rockets. I trust Rudy, he's the one coaching a young team that is on pace to make the playoffs. Criticism is one thing, we're you're calling a guy a moron, acting like he is clueless, and asking for him to resign or be fired you're taking serious stuff. I think Rudy is doing what Phil Jackson and Pat Riley have not shown they can do, successfully take on a rebuilding project.

i have no idea what any of this means. i'm not sure if i agree or disagree with you, or if it is even possible to have an opinion about your post at all. i guess i should just appreciate it, like a fine work of art.

now, about posey... talk about overreacting!! the trade happened on dec. 18. as i write this post, it is almost 2 am on dec. 23. maybe if posey were still getting 2 minutes per game a month from now, you might have a point. but we've only had him A FEW DAYS!!!

so larry brown is playing kenny thomas. so what! what does that have to do with rudy playing james posey? i know, it's exciting because we have a new player. oh boy. you can't wait to see him play. i'll bet you've already opened all your christmas presents, too.

c'mon, do you really not understand the logic in doing things gradually?

Ok I got the idea finally:

    1. The offense that Philly runs is very very simple compared to the Rockets, it consists of dumping the ball to AI and watch him shoot. While for the Rockets it's much more complicated, as it consists of isolating not one, but three players. SF, Cat, and Yao. Therefore Kenny can play in that simple system and Posey can't.

    2. The 76cer lacks depth, man do they suck a$$ in that aspect. How can their back up sf possibly be better than MoTay and Tmo??? Are you kidding me? They must be worse so KT should play and Posey shouldn't.

    3. The Rockets don't need defense because they can shoot.

    4. Rudy is the head coach so he can do whatever he wants to, no questions should be asked. For example, how can we question Mr.Bush's decision? We know jack about the country compared to him. Better yet, nobody can fire Rudy including Les. How can Les possibly know the team better than Rudy. Rudy rules!

    5. For superstars like Clyde, they can play right off the bat. Being superstars mean they have supernatural abilities. They can foresee the future, learn the system before the trade and contribute immediately. Posey is just a normal joe like us, so he sits on the bench and doesn't have the right to question Rudy's coaching.

    6. No matter how the INVISIBLE man, aka Terrence Morris does, his presence on the court is better than James Posey. After all, doing NOTHING on the court is better than DISRUPTING the system.

    Thanks for the enlightenment guys.

Kenny Thomas is new to the Sixers and check his stats out:

    1st Game:

    22 minutes - 11 points and 6 rebounds

    2nd Game:

    23 minutes - 0 points and 13 rebounds

As you can see, Larry Brown is at least giving KT a chance to show his skills. And KT is responding w/ authority. Just like every ex-Rocket.

Yeah, pick on the 2 ex-Rockets who hasn't done squat. I think you might have forgotten Robert Horry, Sam Cassell, etc...

It is hard to beleive that James Posey is worthy of a 3 page thread. The guy is not and never will be an all star caliber player. if he is better than Hawkins then it is only by a slim margin and not worth risking the chemistry that Hawk has created with the team.

    Right on C5179.

Some of the guys around here are looking at Posey as a savior or the guy that is suppose to put us over the top.

At best, Posey is an average offensive player. Hes best suited to slashing to the basket with the ball or off of a Yao pass.

Posey is indeed an upgrade defensively at the 3, but hes not all-world or all-nba there (unless im mistaken). Hes a solid defensive player who is long and athletic.

In the end, Posey is not going to be playing 35+ mins for this team and Id be suprise to see him start any time soon barring an injury to Rice.

I see him getting around 20 mins a game, mostly at Hawkins expense.

IMO, I dont think he would have been a factor against Minnesota. In the end, Rudy is right to wait till he has a few practices under his belt to play him.

    Patience everyone.

I disagree. Posey should be much better than both Hawkins and T. Morris

    1. Posey is only 26, which is about the same age range as our other primary players.
    2. After next year, we'll need a replacement for Glen Rice.
    3. Good complementary role players are hard to find, especially athletic players who can play good defense.
    4. Posey has a much more polished game than T. Morris
    5. Posey will never be an all star but great teams don't need 5 all stars. They need good players that don;t hurt you. Posey is a s good if not better than T. Morris and Hawkins on the defensive side of the ball and a ton better than those two on the offensive end. He can slash, finish, occassionally hit an outside jump shot or a 3.

Forget about his FG% where he was forced to be a primary scorer on a very bad team in Denver. They relied on him too heavily to make things happen.

Here, he just needs to take advantage of open looks and should do a lot better than our current guys.

He is an aggresive, hard working ball hawk who also can run the break and make a jump shot. He's exactly what we needed to fill a big void.

Finally a couple rational posts, Codell and Crash.

Posey is not our savior. We don't need his offense, at all. When in the game, he'll never be our 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd option. He'll pick up garbage points.

In fact, if he starts for us, he'll be our LAST option. That is if he ever starts.

Why is everybody getting their panties in a wad over this? Who really cares? He will not ever be an impact player on this team.

The reason Rice will likely always start ahead is because Rice, being our current last starting option, is if somebody cheats Rice can hit the open J. Can Posey do that. NNNOOOO!

What's the big deal? So he'll play a little D, we've got two guys doing that now. How much better D can he play? Personally I think Hawk is awsome on D and TMo ain't bad either. Is Posey gonna make them look like chumps on D?

There is no reason T. Morris should be playing at all. If you think T. Morris belongs in the same universe as James Posey, you havent watched Posey play.

The only shots T. Morris makes are the ones where he is wide open . Even then, he only makes 40% of them.

Have you ever seen T. Morris create his own shots?
Have you ever seen T. Morris dribble?

James Posey is not a CBA refugee or 2nd round scrub like Morris.

He was a very good player at Xavier and should be a solid contributer.

Will he be an all-star? No

However, there is a Grand Canyon-esque difference between All Star vs Terrence Morris (or Juaqin Hawkins who barely even plays now).

James Posey is a legitimate NBA player.

Will Posey play 2 minutes again tonight, or will he play 3 this time?

Maybe i should start a poll with this one...

There have been few games that the opponents shot their lights out in the first half. It is a big concern and they ended up playing catch-up games. I wonder why the defense could not be adjusted quick enough before letting the opponents score 30+ pts in a quater. Maybe Posey could help the Rox in that area. I remembered Rudy said he is a good perimeter defender.

Some say that people are giving all the excuses for Rudy's alleged "cluelessness." I say it is equally true that many people on this board are using all the excuses to bash Rudy. Those who think that coaching decisions are "no-brainers" are probably just that--no-brainers. Life is a lot more complicated than you think.

Many people don't realize that 90% of the coach's job is invisible to the fans. Some claim that not play the new guy will confuse him of his role on the team. What do you know how Rudy communicate to Posey about his role? Some claim that Posey is a veteran starter who is better than Rice and Morris. What do you know how he has performed in practice (if he even had a chance to pratice between the two games they've played)? Some say that if Thomas can play for the Sixers right away, Posey should play for the Rox right away. What do you know about the Sixers' chemistry?

Judging a coach's job is a lot more difficult than many of you think. That doesn't mean we cannot criticize Rudy. There are some things that I don't agree with him. I don't think he should sit Boki that much. I don't think Morris should be played that much. I think Rudy is generally too undisciplining. I think Rudy is too conservative in making changes, too rigid in bringing on new players sloooowly. I thought he should let Ming play more earlier on.

But these are not absolute things. There are different angles to look at them. There are pros and cons either way you make those decisions. And there are things that I don't know behind the scenes. So dissing the coach for something I don't know for sure is simply not fair.

On the issue of playing Posey, I think it is too early to say anything at all. It's only two, count them, two games. And don't compare that with how Philly is using KT.

KT's game consists of just one thing: catch the ball . . . comtemplate for 5 seconds . . . decide to do what he does best . . . try to beat his man to the hole . . . put up a shot. He does the same thing no matter whom he plays against and no matter whom he plays WITH. (I'm overexaggerating, in case you don't catch it.) It doesn't matter what team he plays on. He does the same thing. The Sixers needed that "same thing" in KT. That's why they traded for him.

The Rockets, on the other hand, does NOT want that "same thing" in KT. They wanted a role player who would play within the offense. That's why they traded AWAY KT and got Posey. The Sixers are much more experienced yet less talented than the Rockets. The needs are very different. The Rockets are in transition. They are still try to develop chemistry. Bring in the new guy slowly should not be surprising. I am pretty sure Posey's minutes will graudually increase. (BTW, I don't buy the "Posey is not in our future" theory.)

Morris is GARBAGE. He gives this team nothing, other than a friend for Francis to hang out with. Morris seems lost on the offensive side of the game, he has no clue on how to dribble, pass, or shoot. Nachbar should be getting the minuets instead. Morris is the reason we lose, everytime he gets into the game we lose a lead or our deficit grows even more. He offers no positives to this team and should released today. Even Hawkins is better.

Based on the article that the Houston Chronicles abut Posey, it seems that Rudy does plan to incorporate Posey into the team. They were even talk about possibility of resigning him to a long contract if things work out. They already had Jim Boylen giving Posey a crash course on the Houston playbooks. The only reason that Posey had not seen significant time is because he didn't get a chance to practice with the team. So, be patience and I think Posey will see some playing time soon to show what he can do. But based on talent wise, he should be an upgrade over what we have now.

    Derrock,

Your smart coach and GM are still wasting Les's money on Maloney. 7yr, $21M. Please defend Rudy on this travesty. You guys should be defense lawyers. Johnnie Cochran should work for you guys!
