Why can't you challenge the play clock?

If the rockets won by a referee mistake, I will not be too happy.

So, I think they need to one of these two things

    1) having that call challenged
    2) some referee, just watching the clock, like an referee upstairs, watching the clock and the snap

And the other play, I saw that flacco was out of bounds, so I wanted a second look, I didnt see it, but in this thread saying that they saw other angle ok.

Why are people acting like this has never happened before. Even teh announcers said it takes one additional second before a penalty is called. Why is it a problem? Because a team gets 41 seconds to hike the ball instead of 40?

Why are you crying about a meaningless penalty? If it was atleast holding or interference i can see that it affects the play. It makes a pass easier to throw or catch. But who the **** cares if the ravens hiked the ball one second late. If it confused the titans, they shouldnt even be worrying about the clock.

It was a mistake but you guys act like it affected the play and it doesnt and shouldnt. All he did was hike the ball one second late. Thats all. They would have won the game even with the penalty.

How do you know this? Had the penalty been called, the rest of the game would have changed.

No - bobrek was right. At the very least, the field goal would have occurred immediately instead of several plays later, meaning there would have been a few more minutes on the clock. So the rest of the game would have had to have been different.

Actually - I take that back. This was at the very end of the game, right? So instead of a 43 yard field goal, it would have been a 50 yard field goal. And Tennessee would have had about 8 more seconds and an extra time out, which would have changed the playcalling options available to them.

    a) he didn't step out of bounds. I thought it looked close but in bounds. It did warrant a replay by stupid CBS, but I didn't think it was out.. and then they confirmed that in the post-game. No controversy.

    b) There's a delay from what I remember between what you see on the screen and what's on the field due to something about the camera being on the clock. That delay is small, though, and it was still definitely a delay of game.

    c) It was 3rd down from Baltimore's own 32... (it was the Heap play, right?) so no, there was no FG coming if he didn't convert the would-be delay of game.

Yeah, there should be instant replay on it.

No the rest of the game would have definitely changed. The outcome may have still been a Raven 13-10 victory, but there is no doubt that the rest of the game (play calling, clock management, field position, play outcome) would have been different.

guys, i just witnessed something really bizzare.
With a second left before the 2 minute warning, little manning snaps the ball and gets a 5 yard play. Reid argues to the refs, saying that the 2 minutes had been reached prior to snap. The refs go on to change the call.
    Shouldn't the same logic apply?

Except if the Ravens hadn't converted they third down they would've been further than 10 yards from where they kicked the field goal and Stover wouldn't have been the one kicking it.

Sure and we can say in the playoff game against the Mavs the Rockets weren't affected by Steve Finley stripping the ball from a Rocket while out of bounds.

Fair play matters and if you notice how apoplectic this board gets when bad calls go against the Rockets you can understand why that is important. If you recall from the game that mistake had many implications. The Ravens might've had to kick a 50 + yard field goal instead of a 42 one and they would've had to use a different kicker since they don't trust Stover to be reliable past 42 yards. As I said the Ravens might've won anyway but this was an important play and I find it incredibly that somethign that can be so clearly determined by instant replay can't be challenged.

As far as this being the norm that refs give a second before calling delay of game as another poster noted they called one against Carolina with less than a second after the play clock expired.

I might have to see if I can find a replay of it but from what I recall it was in Titans' territory. I think it would've been a very long field goal or a punt. Also given the rule that on a missed field goal the ball goes to the spot of the kick the Ravens might've punted it rather than risk giving the Titans better field position.

Delay of game is a 5 yard penalty. The play does not count. So while the down would have been a bit more difficult to pick up, the play would not be reversed as if they failed to pick it up. They simply would have done it again with a chance to pick it up.

How many times have you seen a team pick up the first down, only to have it wiped out by penalty and then come back and pick it up again. The penalty could have changed the drive, but it didnt.

They game would be definitely change, instead of 3rd & 2, they have to go 3rd & 7, so thats a definitely a pass play, so you do a different defense.

In this article there is a pic of the play and it says the ball was snapped 1.35 seconds after the play clock expired, (so the pic shows it was on titans territory, and it was 2:52 remaining on the game)

    here it is the pic:

It was 3rd and 2 and they picked up 24. Would they have picked up 24 had it been 3rd and 7? Probably... and I'm a Titan fan.

    Attention whining "Oiler" fan crybabies.

The "Oilers" are the suck. They are losers. They have always been losers and they will always be losers. If anything, the refs blew that call to give whining, crybaby "Oiler" fans something to whine and cry about despite the fact that they were going to lose anyway.

Like so many other loser franchises in professional sports (the Cubs, for instance), they will never win. Forty-three years and counting. Face it "Oiler" fans, you root for the Utah jazz of the NFL.

And Vince Dumb is a galactic bust.

They might have, they might not, either way that play wasn't supposed to happen. There moving the ball back 5 yards changes the play call on both sides of the ball. As I said earlier the Ravens still might win but considering the Ravens won on a field goal on that drive and there was such an obvious mistake by the ref it seems like something like this should be challengeable.

I say they look into changing it this offseason. Jeff Fisher is co-chairman of the competition committee afterall. I have a feeling he will be bringing it up.
