He may not be right but he isn't lying when he says Morey is all about business. The majority of big free agents are divas so it does have an effect.
True. But I doubt that Morey's supercomputer spat out a mathematical equation that said to have a caravan of Rockets fans travel cross-country to (attempt to) congregate outside Chris Bosh's house and to bring an individually designed iPad to Bosh with all sorts of pro-Rockets propaganda on it. Morey understands the "diva factor" just fine, thanks. 00rocketgirl can attest to this.
Hey guys, I just wanted to chime in on this issue. I love how Morey has remade the roster, think overall he has done a magnificent job. However, when you look at how the perception of the franchise might look to players, you could see where the notion that the Rockets are not a desired destination due to the overall viewpoint of management has some legs. Morey is an asset guy, he divests himself from the emotion when evaluating the players, that is a good thing, unless that gets out to the public in the press, and then it can become a bad thing. Here are some examples that probably do not help the Rockets reputation with the players around the league. 1. No extensions for anyone - players see that policy, they see how folks like Lowry, Scola, Landry, Brooks and Battier are having to do things the hard way, when other franchises work out extensions for the player they want to keep. 2. Carl Landry was a free agent and the Organization talked badly about his knee to keep the bidding low. While a shrewd business move, not one that players will look kindly upon when considering signing with Houston. 3. Trevor Ariza signed here and was immediatly shipped out one year later. While I personally loved this move, it had to resonate around the league with other players, if you are looking to sign with Houston, and move your family, it is a big red flag that you could be shipped out, ASAP. These are just a few of the things that could hurt the perception of the Rockets franchise around the league, while the players are assets, they also are people, and make their choices based upon how they are treated, or the perception of how they are treated. None of us should be shocked when players that are treated like assets turn that around and treat the organization like it is just another job. IMO, the current organization could use some work in that area, because I believe players do care, and do notice those things. Just my .02 DD
To add to what DD said, its nothing wrong with being business, but the organization also has to walk a line of humanity also. AJ Smith is one of the best talent evaluators in the nfl, but the players are totally detached from the organization in general. There should always be balance and right now, I dont there is much. Also, the rockets havent had cap room. Teams really want tpe's and a small contract as opposed to a larger contract for a mediocre player. The rockets have never been in the game for bosh, amare or any of those guys. Think about this, if they were shooting for bosh or amare and using the asset theme, why not go after James if the money is the same? Why not go after Wade? If you have the money, you're in the conversation and if you have the talent, then you're really in the game. Maybe the rockets can get into the 2012 game by having some high end talent and money.
So sayeth DD! Glad to hear from you again. A couple of points about the players mentioned: - I'm pretty sure other teams are holding off on extensions until the new CBA is ratified. - Carl should have been up front about his knee and had the MRI done when he was supposed to. - Ariza was no different than Artest, in that you never keep a cancer in your locker room when you know it's affecting the other players. So far, my take on Morey's methods are that it does say to potential FAs they will not be given more money than they are worth here. Rockets organization doesn't lavish 2nd-tier (non-star) players with bloated, unreasonable contracts like others do.
Ok so now people are coming around to what i have said lately? Neat. I guess others always ride the coattails of the trends. While i create it..
Yep. I wish I could have been a fly on the wall during that clandestine meeting among Bill Ingram, Daryl Morey and Maverick Carter, where Maverick firmly put Morey in his place by telling him that Lebron James would, in fact, NOT sign with the Rockets for the MLE because of Morey's hard-line position on restricted free agency.
Which is a more likely explanation for our lack of a big free agent pickup? A) A combination of little available cap room, chronically injured superstars, a city that is not a premier NBA destination, and a lot of teams and money chasing the few top players available made it impractical to do so. B) A combination of not extending current players after saying we would not extend current players and our trading of high-profile superstar Trevor Ariza sent a shiver down the collective spine of the league's players, who've all decided to stay away. Come on. By this logic, studs should be flocking to places like Memphis and Washington. They love their players so much they hand out ****ty contracts like Halloween candy
I've always thought it was because we never have salary cap room and everything depends on sign and trades.
This is telling on how how far the GARM has fallen. When the "Rocket Guy" aka Bill Ingram's word is taken as gospel...
