I just see this team being a potential match-up nightmare in the future with this combination of players.

Jared Bayless #1 scoring leader in summer league 2008.
Donte Green #2 scorer in summer league 2008.

Shows how much summer league reflects how good a player is.

Because 2 have star potential, the other two have very good starter material potential. That's rare in 4 rookies. None of them have true super star potential but at least 2 have all-star potential.

Its a thread collage. Certainly could use more work than what I have time to put in, but hashing it all together and taking some license while trying to give some credit/reference. Might be lousy, but for those who read it, hope it pans out. bold makes it skimable, perhaps. Cheers.

We have four pretty solid looking rookies this season -- Lamb, Royce, Jones and Donuts. Some of us on the board are clearly getting attached even though we know these rooks have yet to play an NBA game. McHale reminds us, "Historically the league isn't kind to rookies." Yet some of us are still excited, excited to the point where some would say keep the rookies over trading for an established superstar. Why?

The voice of reason says, lets see them play against NBA talent before we declare them untouchable, the folks who are now declaring the rookies untouchable will be the same ones blasting these rookies and morey the second they have a bad game. Its absurd. [Danbury]

Why are some fans being so absurd?
Wouldn't an established star clearly be better than unproved rookies?

We have hope in these rookies because the roster we've disbanded, although we may have loved them, they simply didn't get us where we wanted to go. [jimmyv281] With our old team disbanded, we have to put the love we had for them somewhere and its easier to put it with these rookies than with any of the superstars we've courted who don't seem to love us.

Rookies with potential are hope for your team's future [Nimo] and we have to start somewhere because superstars don't want to be here [HoustOne]. Of course we are excited about these rookies, we don't have a better alternative [thisiscaketown]. These rooks seem enthusiastic to play for us, unlike Howard. [Saleem] Unlike Dwight, the rookies want to play in Houston [SkyrimOwnsAll] I mean, what are we supposed to do all summer, dream of Howard? Seriously, these are the best crop of rookies we've seen in a long while. [Rocket Raccoon] Why would we want to give away these promising rookies for a guy who has already stated quite clearly that he doesn't want to come to our team and our city? [ClKent]

These rookies may pan out to be pretty good, and we'll have them at rookie salaries, and hopefully lock them in after that at reasonable rates. [Carl Herrera]

But what makes us think these are the best rookies we've had in a while? What makes us think that these rookies will excel in the NBA, when there is a decent chance that none of them will even be in the NBA in a couple of years. What makes us root for them? What makes us so irrational?

Tired of waiting on a superstar to fall into our lap, we hope our rookies will develop into future superstars, [Prince] [HorneR] and we love for all of them to become superstars, to become Houston's "Big Four", [cpachbadlee] even though we know the odds of this are extremely slim. I mean, what are the odds we've drafted four LeBron's in the middle of the first round? [primtim24] And isn't this what we are pulling for?

What can we realistically hope for with this crop of rookies?

These rookies look like they will play an exciting brand of basketball [Nimo] and that might be more exciting, to watch "our own" rookies, than watching "someone else's" superstar which might use our team and our city as a weighstation on his way to another location. [Ashlin] I'd much rather see the rookies develop and build chemistry in a young team that have a one year rental with Dwight Howard. [MambaJoe] Its always more fun when a star grown up with your team rather than being known as someone else's star. homegrown is best. [justinh] Because some fans find the idea of growing talent internally much more appealing than trading for Dwightmere and all the drama that comes with him. We're off to a nice start here with these young pieces -- they are all intriguing young talents, with Motie and Lamb particularly having a lot of upside. If we exercise a little paience, Morey can build us something pretty special here. [RedHotRox]. I think Donuts has what it takes to be a superstar. Height Skill and Passion. time will tell. [VooDooPope] Fans are always pulling for drafted rookies, watching them develop and maybe turn into stars or superstars. [prs325].

Can we really say that these rookies have more upside than rookies we've had in the past? Landry played pretty well for us. Scola was a beast. Lowry we pulled out of nowhere and them he became what some say was a border line allstar. Brooks drafting caused an upraor and he at least had one great series against the Lakers that got us all excited. Why are these rookies different/special. How do we convince ourselves to get excited this time?

These rookies are special. They have solid personalities, they mesh well together, play unselfish ball and have unique talents. [Red Glare] and all of them can finish around the rim [Z-Ro&Trae].

And finally, some of us are jaded - and for good reason. We are optomistic, but skeptical, not entirely buying in. Ever since moses, earl, warren ,nolan, and dream were traded, I'm not attached to anyone. I really hated to trade cassell because I thought he would be really, really good, but the chance to win another title was worth it. I'm a howard guy, but to give away these guys for a rental is not worth it to me. We've had discussions about. Howard not passing the extra yr,but I think he would because of his age. If amare can get a max deal with his knee issues,I don't see why a 30 or 31 yr old howard wouldn't get one after a 4 yr deal with dallas. I just don't see it as worth it. I mean between jones, lamb, and donuts,I think 1 maybe all three have all star potential.[leebigez]

In the end, they are just assets, we'll try to hype them up, increase their value, but don't get attached. [Fyreball] [OremLK]

People are in for a rude awakening. It is more likely that all 4 are out of the league or riding the pine than one of them being a star.

Donatas and Lamb and Jones especially impressive in the SL, but do not forget they were primarily playing NBDL caliber players.

White will have serious issues defending and scoring.

Donatas is not explosive, is easily pushed around in the paint and needs to get stronger.

Jones looks like a classic solid bench player.

Lamb can score and should defend eventually, but nothing else.

I am not bashing the selections, I think Lamb's upside is a few all star appearances.

I like Lamb cause he can put points on the board. I think White will be a bust, and I still think TJ in his heat season will put up 14 and 7.

Other than that, Im not attached.

Because nowadays there's nothing to get attached to on the Rockets, and that's what fans do.

I've seen this same example regurgitated several time's here.It really say's absolutely nothing.Make's about as much sense as saying "oh Harold Miner did great in college,so don't ever get excited over a rookie who tore it up in the NCAA" ... Stupid

Why don't you also name some guy's who did well in SL,guy's like LeBron or Chris Paul who also went on to do great in the NBA ? ... oh because that doesn't fit whatever agenda you have .. Look these kid's did well and it's a reason for optimism, that's all we as Rocket's fan's have right now ...What's wrong with enjoying it while we still have a bit of hope ? I thought that's what being a fan was all about,Silly me,I've always saved my negativity for other team's ..Let them prove themselves on the floor,so far they've done good,so why the hell shouldn't fan's be hopeful.
