I was thinkin about how I became a Rockets fan and I had this flashback to this game that I vaguely remember. The Rocks were so much more entertaining in the 80's than they are now and any time they used to play Denver it was just runnin n gunnin all night long. This game took place in the mid 80's I guess between the Rocks and Nuggets in Denver. I think it was a playoff game. In the game I think either Akeem and Ralph both fouled out or Akeem didn't play because he was sick or suspended for fighting or somethin. I think the game went into double OT, very entertaining game. In the first OT, Ralph or Akeem fouled out and we were left like totally barren in the middle. Then this guy named Granville Waiters I think was his name, a tall lanky balding guy, comes into the game and plays like Superman. Rebounding everything, scoring, defending, just doin about everything to help the Rockets win that game. I never remember him ever playing very much but the way he played in that game is one of the reasons I became a big Rockets fan. ------------------ "Somebody DO something out there." -Bill Walton
I am a fan of the Rockets because Cat plays for them. I knew him when he was in college and he is a cool guy to hang out with. I love the guy and will until he retires.(obviously after he retires to) Before he was drafted by the Rocks I hated Houston because they had so much talent(Hakem, CB, and Clyde) all in one year. I still think even if Cat hadn't resigned with the HOuston I would still like the Rocks. ------------------ "GiddyUP!!!" Krammer from Seinfeld
I remember first getting to know the Rockets when I was a kid and everyone was excited when we beat the Lakers to get into the NBA finals (first time)... Plus, having Robert Reid (as #50) visit basketball camp helped solidfy my loyalty ------------------ Moochie Norris Hair Club for Men - I'm not only the president, I'm also a client
I remember watching that game Timing. However, I don't remember Granny being a force. In the second overtime, he jumped center, then came out on the first dead ball. But you're right, it was a great game. ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
I became a Rocket fan during the first championship season and have been hooked ever since. ------------------
That was Game 6 of the '86 WC semis and Akeem got tossed in that playoff game for grabbing Mike Mathis or Jack Madden by the arm and spinning him around while protesting a foul. Granny had to play in the 2nd OT because of that and made a very crucial layup late in that period. That win clinched the series. ------------------
I got into basketball when my sister started playing it seriously. She got a scholarship to play point guard in college, and she was really into Michael Jordan when he was new in the league, right about the same time that my best friend use to talk so much about Magic Johnson. Even though we live in Houston, he's ALWAYS been a big Lakers fan. My sister liked the Pistons a lot, but I've always been a hometown boy. I grew up watching baseball. I loved the Astros, and always dreamed of playing in the big leagues. I liked Kevin Bass a lot, and I loved to watch Nolan Ryan and Mike Scott pitch. So when I started watching basketball, naturally I rooted for the home team. I never actually got to attend a game until 1994, though, a home loss to the Jazz. But ever since that game, I've been die-hard. Basketball has long-since become my favorite sport, both to play and to watch, and I'm a big fan of the NBA in general. But my roots and my loyalty will ALWAYS be right here with the Houston Rockets... ------------------ "There are three kinds of lies: Lies, Damned Lies, and STATISTICS..." - Mark Twain -
First, I was a fan of the Phoenix Suns because of Charles Barkley. When Barkley was traded to the Houston Rockets in August of 1996, I instantly became a Rockets' fan. Before 1996 I did not really care for the Rockets. I will be a Rockets' fan forever! I like to watch Barkley playing basketball, and when I see Barkley's teammates play well I also become fans of his teammates. ------------------
Oh well, perhaps my memory has embellished (sp?) on Granville's performance but it's a great memory nontheless! ------------------ "Somebody DO something out there." -Bill Walton
NO NO!! You are right! Granny came off the bench and was tearing people appart. At the time my friends and I had a Granny fanclub going - mostly because he never played and rarely made an impact ever - but in that playoff game against Denver he came in and was kicking butt left and right.. ------------------ Moochie Norris Hair Club for Men - I'm not only the president, I'm also a client
Watching the games when I was little ,laying in the waterbed just watching my Grandma yelling at all the players at the top of her lungs.(She had nicknames for a lot of players) My 1st favorite player was John Lucas but I really didnt start getting into until like the age of 13 or 14 when card collecting was a big part of my life. Obviously Im going to route for my home team but I think right now Houston would still be my favorite team. Favorite player of all time:The greatest player of ALL TIME Hakeem Olajuwon(Still unbeatAble) ------------------ President of the why in the Hell isnt Langhi playing club!!!
Wow hakeem has had a big effect on the Rox fans. ------------------ "Kenny, The Basketball scientist, Whoo Hoo." Charley B, on TNT
Started because of Hakeem and being a UH alum, during the '86 finals. I'm still a fan today but more because of Rudy T. than Hakeem and Clyde. I've been disappointed with Hakeem over the past few years but I really admire Rudy's work ethic, his professionalism and class. ------------------

I'm a Rockets fan because I was born and raised in Houston and no matter where I live, Houston will always be home. I back my own. I go back as far as Murphy and Rudy T, Ed Ratleff, Kevin Kunnert and Mike Newlin. There have been some great players to wear Rockets red (and the current pj's), none greater than Hakeem (Calvin's still my man, though). But, he ain't bigger than the Rockets. They'll go on. And if Hakeem ever wears any other uniform, I will hope that they beat him as fervently as I hope they beat anyone else. ------------------
Timing, grummet, and Valio: I guess we all remember the same game, but I just don't remember Granny kicking ass! I know he played, and I know he was the only big man left for the 2nd OT, but I also remember him coming out after the jump ball. But let me add this...the mid eighties were a very "experimental" time for my wife and me, so there are many small memory gaps of that time frame, if you get my drift! ------------------ Behad Sergeant at Arms of the Clutch BBS Asking the question: What is more dangerous, an AK-47 or a scooter?
