I completely agree with you as far as the gap in the talent level, which is undoubtedly the biggest factor. I do feel that McHale lacks the coaching skills to guide a weak team like ours through the difficult times that we are facing.

"In Morey I trust" pretty much sums up my thoughts on this hiring. Definitely not the guy I was hoping for, but I really do trust Morey, and his judgment. For once it's his team, and I he will be scrutinized more heavily than ever. Let's see if our man can get it done.

How do we know adelman even wanted to stay? Adelman seemed unhappy a long time ago. Adelman is saying he doesn't even want to coach. Maybe morey and les weren't begging him but who knows how interested adelman really was. It had run its course.

    See Garnett, Kevin Love

Motivated enough to take on the job? if you whip it out are you motivated enough to pee? If you are going to try something you are not going to just half ass it I assume? Right? I mean this is not stanley the maytag repairman we are talking freaking kevin mchale ! this guy has his own self respect and was a freaking GM and knows basketball. To suggest he is not experienced is a joke... I would like to see how many wins red auerbach or tex winters would get with al jefferson as the star? We are getting a former GM and coach that also won championships as a player? Yeah you are right people.. total tomato can.

Results wise our top 2 players have had unfortunate injuries and we still parlayed that into 7 games with LA , a new star in martin for a song, and emergence of a near all star in lowry. One win away from the playoffs. How many wins would Dallas have without dirk? cynicism maybe that yao keeps getting hurt ,but the rockets have done nothing but take these injuries and keep on trucking.

The resilience of the team has kept me interested.

The negativity of this board is astounding. The lakers get a jokeshop in mike brown and we get mchale former Gm AND coach and NBA legend? We have a freaking tenured GM on our bench with another guy that is supposed to be the bomb brains assistant that morey is putting in place. And we will get a set of moreyball guys as assistants helping with play calling up and down the coaching roster? Sounds like a brain trust to me not a snoozer like mike brown !! and people are crying ? What coach did you want when it was clear adelman was done?

    who?
Larry brown? phil jackson? van chancellor? who? your mom?

That's true. Most any kind of (insert random demographic) don't make good coaches. Only a small percentage of head coaches go on to become successful in the league. Out of the 50+ people that have been head coaches for the last decade, only PJax, Rivers, Popovich, Larry Brown, and Riley have won rings.

    Agreed.

Honestly, I pretty much checked out on the Rockets the last couple of seasons because it was past time for them to blow it up and rebuild. Adelman is a great coach, but he was publicly griping about the fact that he came to Houston to coach Yao and Tracy and ended up with Scola and Hayes. That comment alone was a clear sign to me that it was all going downhill from there.

I don't even feel the need to find a bad guy in this. It was just time to blow the whole thing up. At least the Rockets are going into rebuild mold with a few prospects and trade assets in various draft picks and obligations. Conditions changed. Need new coach to fit new conditions and goals.

McHale seems a great guy to take on this job. Record aside, if he develops players and gets the team moving forward after the initial tank job, then he boosts/rehabs his image. Unlike some other coaches, his strong suit is not strategy but communication and player development. Sounds like a fit worth watching. I am checking back in. League pass as soon as the lockout ends.

I agree with Durv, especially point number 4.

There is a general cynicism about the front office. Year after year we hear all this noise about the Rockets wheeling and dealing, but nothing to show for it.

I am not too "down" on this pick, I feel like sometimes the unpopular pick will pay off in the end.

Number one, we don't know how much control Morey has over who the coach is. I'm sure he has at a minimum certain parameters/limitations to work under. Second, if any team other than the Rockets had just hired Kevin McHale to coach them, it would be considered a huge joke. That's not to say he won't do okay, but until now there hasn't been a reason to be anything BUT down on hiring McHale to do pretty much anything other than commentate, unless you're talking about him playing some center - it would be good to finally get some height on this team.

I think that some fans are down on the whole team right now. We just don't have the talent to make the playoffs, or better said to make a deep run in the playoffs. No matter who gets who gets hired, the talent isn't changing so there are no change in playoff expectations.

DM, through no lack of effort on his part, has not been able to revamp the roster yet. I am hopefully optimistic that he will, but realize that DM will have to get lucky. Until that time, I don't think that it really matters who is the head coach.

I dont understand why this is still an issue. It's clear that RA, as great as he was, wanted to keep trying to win and didnt have the patience to develop other guys or experiment. Nothing wrong with that, if your coaching the Lakers or another contender, but he wasn't. This team needs to develop players and try different things. It just wasn't what RA signed up and the front office was set on changing it up. I can't blame either side for their decision given the state of the team.

And i agree with Durvasa as well. McHale is associated with Minny too much and that alone makes people feel like he sucks. His quote about not being a career coach also make it seem like he doesn't even believe in himself, so you have to question if he's for real.

What is interesting to me is seeing what Morey can do with a staff he's got more control over and with all these contracts/players he inherited finally starting to disappear. Let's not forget he still has had to work around what are probably the two biggest disappointments in rockets history.

Not with the current level of players on this team. Even adding the 14th and 23th pick won't get us as far as that IMO. 35 wins is more likely with McHale at best.

I wanted a different direction. Obviously didnt know Morey would go complete and polar opposite. Its more the uneasiness with this all right now. I am not sure Morey can pull together a great plan like he envisions. Since this is his whole thing right now? I just dont have complete confidence in Morey like others do he has what it takes to pull something off like this. I like the idea's but so far not his execution. To me this is more questionable decision making from Morey. Until we get those players here that says he has a plan and otherwise? I wont change my mind.

whats going to happen is that the team will win less than 40 games and Mchale will be blamed...but it'll probably be due trying to plug Yao back in and getting players to adapt to any new plays or defensive sets...

I think just about any coach can win 40 games with this group once they have settled in. the problem is that we're always changing coaches, stars, rotations, etc...the team always seems to do well once the distractions are gone, but by then damage is already done...

That's not clear AT ALL. It's pure conjecture and wishful thinking to justify the FO's actions. He wanted to keep trying to win because he didn't have a contract for next year and that was the only option he had. How do I know this? Because he stated it, repeatedly.

However if this is Moreys move to get the top draft picks over the next three years? I completely support it. One of those is likely to turn into a star. This is his developmental coach. I trust Moreys drafting with whats available at draft time.

the players on this team won 43 games this season. the same exact players are going to be worse next year? even though they showed improvement as the season went on and they developed chemistry? suddenly next year they are going to regress just because adelman is not around? mchale is so terrible that he is going to be a -8 coach?

golden state warriors won 36 games this season. are the rockets secretly worse than the warriors? wil next seasons rockets be worse than this seasons warriors?? only adelman can hide this secret???

Are next year's Rockets going to have a Yao minute mandate forced upon them by management? That would surely affect their record. You would have to admit that if you weren't a shill for Less Alexander.

yao was given a maximum minute limit, not a minimum minute limit. if yao plays for the rockets next year, it is likely that his minutes will be limited even more. so the answer to your question is yes. i can guarantee you that yao will not play more than 24 mpg next year. personally i will be shocked if yao plays more than 15 minutes in a game.

but kets take the opposite end of your stipulation - suppose that yao does not play AT ALL for the rockets next year - does that count as a plus or a minus?? if no yao, then does mchale get a few bonus wins to count against the 44 standard ??? or should it be the other way around. no yao means penalty and mchale needs more wins to be considered equal??? just asking for some clarification here.
