Whether you want to label then as white supremacists they label themselves, the point is, when asked to denounce these violent alt right groups (and they are one) he simply told them to stand back, and stand by. Which can be taken, by many, as a beacon for many things, including voter suppression. That's the issue. Especially with the way Trump talks about the election.
I'm white, and I know of a victim of white supremacy. I say know of, because she's not alive anymore. She didn't die because of white supremacy, but her life was threatened by the KKK for working a mcdonald's drive thru. This was in the late 90's. I guess depends on your definition of victim, too.
