Why ask why? People want to see what they want to see. Does it make it racist for a whites to want to watch a white hero? I don't think so. Do you remember all the doctor shows all the way through to ER and Grey's Anatomy? Notice that there wasn't any indian male actors as doctors. You had asian, white, and blacks - lots of blacks, but not a single Indian. Just goes to show that media is a reflection of the society it makes up.
1. Generally less striking features => not as handsome => less sex appeal. (Compare to women where less striking features can still create more femininity) 2. Less emotive expressions => can only have so many keanu's. 3. Less culturally/practically inclined => families want kids to go into more "practical" professions. All stereotypes, but combined, result in much smaller % of leading asian actors. My biased guess without data to support.
Moving the goalposts? As far as I'm aware, the US State Department has never claimed the US was a melting pot. Would be kind of stupid as well, since the 'melting pot' would have began with the Atlantic slave trade.
think of it like pokemon, asians are the common kind (bulbsaur, pikachu, eevee etc), they make up like half the world. white folks on the other hand, only make up less than 10%, thus rare pokemons (charizard, mewtwo, zappados ect), so people want them.
A little. Have you ever been to Europe? I have, several times (although not in a few years), and back in the early 1970's, when I was single, I spent several months there. Traveling around, you are thrown together with other folks traveling around just as you are. Heck, I would run into the same people, making their way from one incredible place to another. As a result, I got to know several Europeans, many of them women (I may have mentioned the blonde identical Norwegian twins before... oh my god!), and I can assure you that a good looking German chick talking to me sounded sexy as hell. Maybe you just need some more adventures, finalsbound!
The only time Hollywood made the mistake of starring an A list actor next to this guy...Result Tom Cruise got owned! Also let's not forget...
Ahem, Mr Peepers is not amused: Bollywood IS a melting pot, welcoming to all nations/creeds/colors. They go out of their way to give second chances to our (deservedly) faded American sketch comedy stars. So hungry are they for a white leading man, they'll even give Chris Kattan a shot! Or so I gather is the zany premise of a show I never bothered to watch.
They're bad actors, that's why. It's not like they ever win an Academy award. Oh wait. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haing_S._Ngor BAM! Eat that Pat Morita.
Killing Fields is haunting; a deserving performance. As to the lack of Asian stars in Hollywood movies, can we all just agree to blame the Khmer Rouge and move on? Two birds, one stone? That Pol Pot was a motherf---er.
It's quite disturbing how so many people naturally assume hollywood movies are only watched in America. Are Asians the minority in the world? Do they only exist in the US and China/Japan/etc? Also, the bollywood example is rubbish. Reason being, bollywood actors/actresses are constantly trying to appear more 'white', but you basically never see a white leade trying to be black, asian or middle eastern - except in jest. The only barrier to white actors in hollywood is language and whatever credibility audiences associate with actually being Indian.
I think Chow Yun Fat would be a huge start here if he spoke better English. Unfortunately I don't think I've ever seen an American movie with prominent Asian actors that wasn't about war or featured martial arts. I don't like flying Kung Fu movies, I got that out of my system 30 years ago.
Well, you mentioned Chow Yun Fat ... I think he has been the leading actor in a few non-martial arts/war American movies. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/J5JT7nBlrWI?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/J5JT7nBlrWI?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Unless you consider gun fighting is martial arts too...
Because that is where my question is going. Your answer was basically "because Hollywood is a reflection of society". So I am asking WHY does society see Asian males as geeks and kung-fu guys, but not as sexually attractive?
Pretty sure thats not true. Even if it is, there is a lot less Native Americans in the US so why aren't there more of them in pop culture? By your theory they are the rarest "pokemon" of them all.
