Odd fact with Gasol actually being a Memphis product... though that maybe where difference lies. Marc does a bit of that classical American bruiser to him, while Pau possess a rare degree of finesse and refined Euro style.
(Quoting this post instead of all the "soft/not soft" posts) I think you guys are arguing semantics here. I don't love Pau being called soft either, but I think it's obvious that what the OP really meant by "soft" is "not a bruiser". I suspect guys like Aldridge, KG or David West would fall under OP's definition of "soft" too. And I wonder if jump shot happy enforcers like Charles Oakley or Haslem wouldn't be "soft" as well. It's not the most successful choice of words, but whatever. I think it's obvious what he meant.
The third brother plays for UCLA. http://www.uclabruins.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/gasol_adria01.html I heard that he couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time.
No. Aldridge is soft. KG, West, and Oakley are definitely not soft. What makes a player soft is allowing the defense to push you off of your spot. As much as I love both guys (and would love to see them on the Rockets), Aldridge and Pau are soft because they start "attempting" to post up at the elbows and allow big guys to just push them out to near the 3pt line. So, they just take jumpers from there because that's what their defender "allowed" them to do. Dirk used to be the same way until Rick Carlisle came in and forced him to fight for position closer to the basket. You can look no further than our Houston Rockets frontline to see the difference between a soft big guy and a tough one. Patterson rarely holds his position even though he's built like a tank but Asik is immovable. Pau is one of the biggest PF's in the league and guys push him around.
You didn't understand my post at all. My point was that "soft" is a divisive term. A million sports fans mean a millions different things by it. Personally, at this point I'm tired of soft/tough discussions because people will mean different things by it. I take it topic by topic. It's obvious that the OP's inherent definition of "soft" is "a non-bruiser type". One can criticize OP's choice of words, but Gasol is definitely not a bruiser type.
