so radar jammers aren't legal? i've seen them for sale in magazines lots of times. i never bought one because i didn't know if they were legal or not. plus i don't think a cop would be to happy when he tried to clock me and got back gibberish on his radar gun.

There is no real way to rationalize radar detectors - speeding is illegal and radar detectors help you avoid getting caught.

However, there is an argument that sometimes speeding fines are levied for revenue raising, and not just to protect safety.

Smeg - they are only illegal in some states, mostly in the east, and defintely not W.A.

It pisses me off when I see a cop sitting on the side of the road with his radar detector sticking out the window. Geez, go save a lady from getting mugged or something!

Radar detectors are fine if they're used in moderation. If you're travelling on a rural road between cities, I see no problem with gunning it up to 90-95 when there are only a few cars on the road and the cops out there have nothing better to do than set up speed traps. If your screaming down the West Loop at 95 mph, weaving between cars, that's when you're asking for trouble. When drivers see somebody driving like that, they often get caught off guard and don't know what to do, which could result in a lot of wrecks.

Of course, nobody REALLY follows speed limits in Houston anyways, so going 10 mph over the speed limit to keep up with traffic is OK. Depending on if a cop is in a bad mood or not, they'll sometimes pull you over for going even 2-3 mph over the speed limit...

My detector also helps me control my speed. If you are making a long trip, it's sometimes easy to lose track of how fast you are going,my detector going off from time to time helps to remind me to check my speed.I really try not to speed too much, unless I'm on a freeway thats posted 55 ...like the song I can't drive 55... no matter how hard I try.

i run by two motorcycle cops that sit with their radar detectors and try to hit people hiding behind a bush near a railroad track. this has to be the stupidest thing i've ever seen. who speeds over railroad tracks? these particular ones are so uneven that if you did speed, you'd pull a "dukes of hazaard" and your car would go flying through the air!

i really can't stand these two cops and my blood always boils when i run past them, which unfortunately is like 6 times a morning (circular route)

they could be doing so much more to help the community.
