i think its really *****ing dumb to think that this doesnt come from both sides. or i bet even a nazi could probably be pretty condescending. idiot
I think it was a good article. I think it goes a little too far in explaining away all the ways in which conservative political movers are manipulative and many conservative voters are dumb-****s, but it has a lot of truth to it too. This particular environment with the Republican fillibuster seems like an especially bad time to bring up liberal condescension, but even when the Republican positions are strong the condescension is still there.
If someone is unemployed and they and their family have no health insurance, are on unemployment, and use food stamps, but vote for Republicans because they have been told that doing otherwise is unAmerican, socialist, or against Christian values, then they are voting against their own interests. It is in their interest to see to the needs of their family, to see that they can get quality healthcare when they need it, to put food on their tables. When they vote for Republicans, they are putting people in office who are against the very things that keep that family afloat. It isn't condescending, it is reality.
Agreed. I deride people who say stupid s***. It isn't because I am better than that person, it is because I try not to say stupid s***. The nuts who don't know what they are talking about abound on all points along the political spectrum. There are some, I recognize that. Unfortunately, I don't see many of them, all I see are the idjits spouting off about socialism, fascism, birth certificates, and death panels. Agreed, but the only other thing to call them is liars. I like that Obama has recently started calling some people out (not as liars directly, but as "factually inaccurate") on their distortions. Many bad actors in the GOP have put forth a narrative using inaccuracies, distortions, and lies and then claim that the liberal elite is condescending for correcting the lies. There is a difference, though. I am not just repeating something false over and over again to try and get a segment of the population to believe that it is true. It isn't that many conservatives don't listen, it is that they believe everything that conservative commentators say without fact checking. I know that the same thing happens on the liberal side too, but I get just as irritated with people who think that Bush and Cheney orchestrated 9/11 or that the Bush family was in league with the bin Ladens. Agreed. I deride people who say stupid s***. It isn't because I am better than that person, it is because I try not to say stupid s***. As long as conservatives eat what they are fed on Faux "News" all day and as long as liberals try to tell the truth to correct the lies, you are right.
So basically, you can determine what's best for people even better than they can themselves... no condescension there.
oh...you just don't know what your talking about because he is so much smarter and better at life than you are. after all...it is reality...
um.. that actually wasnt what i referred to when i made my comment about not hearing that. But it's really cute that you completely made something up in an effort to "burn" me. Obviously your creative juices are flowing today. whhooozzz a wittle cutey?! you are.
I dunno...sometimes the people in your office/school/halfway house/bridge club can come off with political stereotypes that seems an awful lot like something out of Southpark. The truth is most people are pretty ignorant, period. You might be less sensitive to it if they are ignorant people that support what you might think are sound ideas in an ignorant way, but it doesn't make them any less irritating. When it comes to politics, some really great policy ideas can come from anyone, and the banter like the kind I've just read is a serious dumbing down of anything that resembles serious political debate. Its just as much of a lack of insight to characterize all leftists as policy wonkish liberals as it is to paint all supply-siders as abortion doctor killing neanderthals. With that said, I find it hard for anyone to have a good reason to support the 2010 incarnation of the GOP unless they are dogmatic social conservatives or very wealthy, because the tent shrank an awful lot. If any of you really believe Clinton or Obama are socialists you might do yourself a favor by befriending someone who does self identify as a socialist. You'll find they probably hate them more than you do.
Personally, I think of myself as a liberal in social values, and moderate in fiscal values. Generally, I find people around me more conservative than I am(young people who don't give a flip about politics notwithstanding). Never had a problem with them. Never felt superior to them. Never talked down to them. Never felt the need to. Never in my life have I actually had a problem with conservative viewpoints. But to not think condescendingly towards the idiots to blindly follow the likes of Rush and O'Reily is simply really, really hard. I try to understand these people, but I just can't. They're just freaking morons.
Being ignorant is factual. If you don't know something, you are ignorant of it. There's no other way to spin it. Accusing others of being condescending is completely subjective.
