You should check the thread title first!

This thread is about the competition for center primacy, not about trade!

Dwight is definitely better than Yao atleast this season. You don't see people hustling to block and steal the ball from Dwight as they do Dwight, Yao infact has zero respect around this league. Everyone wants to showboat on him and this is because he is a soft player.

Dwight Howard is young, atheletic and strong. If he is is not better than Yao at this point, then they are at par. If he develops a jumper, then no one can stop him. Did anyone see him bully Shaq when they played miami, and he is only 21

Should've included Bynum and Oden in the poll. The two and DHoward will be challenging Yao for the best C in the NBA.

To me DHoward is more defensive oriented, Bynum is more offensive, Oden is somewhere in between. All there have great body and athleticism. Of course at this point DHoward is much more experienced and the Magic is built around him, but the other two probably have comparable upside.

    Eddie Curry...jk Nah, Andew Bogut

Yao is probably the most overrated player in the league, according to general consensus of anyone not a Rockets fan. To much initial overhype deserved or not affects how Yao is viewed (imagine if any of those other centers get the attention Yao does?) But I do think their reasons to believe that are valid.

He's increased his scoring stats each year but that's probably the one area where he affects game outcome. His rebounding and defense have been at the same relatively un-impactful level past few seasons. And Yao's passing is and was always WAY overblown. Best passing big man since Bill Walton? No in here will recall a single game where Yao's deft passing alone carved up a team.

Answering the question for real, Dwight Howard is 2nd best by a very slim margin. Amare might not ever be the rebounder Howard already is. Howard can match Amare's scoring output (what Amare's capable of doing) if he works hard enough at developing his O'.

In head to head match ups this season, Darko outplayed Yao. Career wise in the long haul, its most likely Howard.

    You dont watch Magic basketball.
DW12 gets hijacked/stripped as much as Yao does.... the difference is Yao can make the FT.

the sad thing is yao has never been at that No.1 center position inarguably. his window of attaining that position started from last season and is closing fast. he's in his prime now but dwight howard is closing in on him really fast.

    Dwight does have his problems

Matched up against the right defender he struggles. There is no Centre in the East that can handle him. Coincidentally his poorest game happened against a decent defender ( Garnett) He can't defend people one on one. He gets the blocks, he alters shots but he does have weaknesses too. Having a gunner like Rashard Lewis has helped him alot. Plus Turk has been shooting the lights out too. IF the rockets had a depending 3pt threat like Turk we would see Yao destroying as well

I voted for Dwight! Right now, in this young season, Dwight is on the same level with Yao. But i think we should bring back the same discussion in next January.

For the future, i feel Andrew Bynum will be another candidate!

The only way Howard struggleed against the Celtics was hitting FTs. It seemed like they fouled him 20 times. He was way too strong and KG was clearly overmatched against Howard. The only thing the Celtics could do was foul him hard.

Howard doesn't get stripped as much as Yao though he does turn it over a lot.

There are two things DH needs in order to take it to another level: (1) A better FT percentage. His new form looks good but it still breaks down too often. (2) A couple of "go to" moves and more touch with the basketball. Though he only turns 22 next month, I'm not convinced Howard will ever develop touch on offense. If he's going to have it, we would see it by now. Take a look at Bynum.

Perkins was guarding him and DW12 dominated.
Second half Celtics switched KG and Perkins on him which simply held him down to 5pts.

That being said, DW12 is definitely the most physically dominate player in the league, but He doesnt have the soft touch to be a dominate low post player, His poor FT is a killer in the playoffs.
