a few years after dogma came out prince invited kevin smith out to paisley park to film him for a week - he talks about it for probably an hour - well worth anyones time - it is hilarious. i wont spoil, but i will say that kevin smith came out of it very disillusioned about prince. here is part 1. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gy_cLJ19HMg?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Gy_cLJ19HMg?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
There is another spanish director who I think just owns both of them.. the guy who directed 'Children Of Men'... <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/EjNk-nxHjfM?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/EjNk-nxHjfM?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
The "Evening with Kevin Smith" DVD's are hilarious. He's a great story teller. The 3rd DVD is kind of meh but still enjoyable.
I agree, there are many people who expect the moon from every flick. I'm not one of those people. I base my expectations on genre for the most part. As a cop buddy flick, this falls pretty damn flat.
Funny..I used to be a fan of Kevin Smith...but I thought he got incredibly formulaic and that Jersey Girl (not a great movie..but okay) was the first time he'd shown any growth since Chasing Amy. While watching Zach and Miri - about 1/3 of the way through I thought "this is too much like a Kevin Smith movie"..then I saw the credits at the end and realized why I still like the guy as a person and a blogger though
Cuarón is not Spanish. He is Mexican and so is Guillermo del Toro. Robert Rodriguez was born in San Antonio.
I'm more Mexican than Robert Rodriguez, and I'm from South America. F$ck him and his bastardized mutant take on Mexican culture. Carlos Reygadas > Toro + Iñárritu + Cuarón
I'll allow it! I agree with you, sir. Robert is NOT Mexican, he just takes some Mexican undertones and makes them seem "cooler" than what they really are in most of his movies with "Mexicans." May I assume Pedro Almodóvar is somewhere in the first two locations in your equation there? Mujeres al Borde..., átame, etc.? Have you seen "Machete"?
I've reached the point because I won't watch anything new by either one of these guys so I can't comment on anything they've put out the past 5 years. However, Sixth Sense and Unbreakable still hold up after all this time. Kevin Smith's Clerks was his breakout film, but it's kind of painful to watch now. True, he shot it on low budget, but I thought it was overrated when it first came out. After sitting through his next five films I realized that he was pretty much a one-trick pony, and not even that good at his one trick. Chasing Amy might be the single worst movie I have ever watched. So I guess I'll vote for Kevin Smith.
I can take or leave Kevin Smith's movies (especially from Jersey Girl on). But I cannot say a bad thing about the guy because of his podcast shows. Smith is a born storyteller and even the guys around him can pump out funny and compelling programs (i.e. Tell em Steve-Dave). Ever since his "podcast network" expanded to 5 shows a week, it's been way easier to get stuff to listen to at work. So I don't care if he makes good movies or bad movies (though I think his hockey movie has potential), the guy can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned.
It's kind of funny because I think both have failed in recent years for the exact opposite reason: M. Night did really well directing the twist movies. The problem now is that everyone expects a twist in movies, so they never have as much an effect as they would if it simply had been someone else's movie. On top of that, instead of trying to branch out to a different genre of films, he keeps at this trying to find more crazy and weird twists that he can turn into films instead of the other way around. Lastly, he by himself is a very good director. Sets are great, the acting (at least dramatically is pretty good) as long as it does not have to be purely comedic, and the scenes are often paced well. He needs to let someone write a movie, and come in as a director. However, the studio needs to make sure the writer/producer is there to keep him in check. However, I think he has too much of an ego to admit that this needs to happen. For Kevin Smith, he is a hilarious guy who writes great movies. He is a good director, but nearly every movie of his that I love or like is one that has a great script that he wrote. That is what makes them great movies and cult classics because they are re-watchable. All those movies of his that did not pan out are him trying to director work written by someone else, and attempting to use big name actors to help out. Yes he has used name actors in the past, but they were rising stars, not established stars. He needs to take a break and get some new ideas to develop his own movie script and run with it. Or if he will continue to direct movies he has not written, he needs to step into the smaller budget film market and find some that are off the beaten path like his original films. Kevin Smith's humor and style is not something that will win over the mainstream audience. Has to accept that and use it.
Sorry for double post but this picture made me have to post this... <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KgmeL_xuB0I?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KgmeL_xuB0I?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
