He's listed at 6-8, but with shoes he's 6-9, while Thomas with shoes is 6-7. Most the foreign players are listed barefoot, because the NBA seems to be the only major pro league that lists heights in shoes. The players are usually never measured because they are overseas, so they are just listed at the foreign height, which means compared to most NBA players Songaila is rwally about 6-9 9although several NBA players go barefoot listing as well as it apparently is a rule that the player can choose) The heights are freaking stupid they need to just get a uniform rule and stick to it. So Songaila looks undersized by his listing but he's not really that much. Take Nocioni, he's 2.03 m barefoot (which is 6-8 barefoot) yet he's listed at 6-7 and most people assume that's in shoes. You can't really go just by the listings, Songaila is big enough to play the 4.
BTW Apparently Chicago is considering dumping JR Smith That would be a great move, that combined with Snyder would definitely help make an improvement, instead of just banking on Snyder/Head and hoping Sura can play.
Ditto squared. For the MLE: My first tier choice will be Songaila and Marcus Banks or V-Span. My next choice will be Ariza or V-Span and Wright. For the $4.6M TPE, I am willing to wait until the february trade deadline to use it if teams are not willing to work with us now. Players making around this money range that we could be interested include: Wilcox (sign & trade) Matt Hapring (sign & trade) Drew Gooden (sign & trade) Mo Peterson Gordan Giricek Carlos Arroyo
I may be way off, but why Ariza?? He couldn't even get off the ORLANDO MAGIC bench, that is sad no-matter who you are. So just by going by that... why Ariza? Because of one highlight dunk? Let me repeat myself a few more times Orlando Bench Orlando Bench Orlando Bench If you cannot get off the Orlando Magics bench, that says there is somthing very wrong with you. Has anyone thought about that?? It's not Dallas' bench It's not the Spurs bench We are talking about the Orlando Magic here Nuff' said, he HAS to have some major flaws that no-one is talking about
Dunking over Ben Wallace is always impressive. Anyways, I really don't know anything about Ariza either. Rox Addict wanted to know why, so I tried to find answers and searched him up on youtube.
I think there is more than enough talent out there for "quality" depth. i think Banks and Ariza both would add quality depth, talent, and athletic ability. I've watched some video and read some scouting reports on Banks, and he seems to be a GREAT 94 feet defender and seems to be very pesky on that side of the ball. his offense is decent enough to not be a liability and is improving. Ariza i think would be a GREAT low risk pick up. Some people who have posted in this thread are making it seem like he would be expected to start and play 40 mins a night on this team, which is the farthest thing from the truth. i think he is a good defender with good size, atheletic ability, and of course the "p" word comes into play with him. i think he would be a great addition in terms of salary/low risk/potentially high reward. I could see him being a good defender against players like Josh Howard, Stackhouse, Boris Diaw (keep in mind these are all players we would have to defend well in a playoff series). I would sign Banks for 3 mil, Ariza for 2 mil, and use the TE to get a big man who can come off the bench to play the 4/5 when needed (Songaila would be perfect, or Lorenzen Wright, or even Cato, but i would only sign him with the vet min)
Juaquin Hawkins. Torraye Braggs. Jason Collier. Terrence Morris Walt "The Wizard" Williams. Dan Langhi. Reece Gaines. ...er, oops.
Interesting news... Orlando GM Otis Smith has declared his intention to match all offers on Ariza unless they are outrageous. He's a good player to have. At the very least, he's Ryan Bowen with some actual talent.
OK I am not sure how it would work sal cap wise but I think we should try to get involved in this Al Harrington deal. Al has narrowed his options to 2 teams Indiana and Golden State so we of course have little to no chance to get Harrington, but should Al decide to go to Golden State then we can get involved as GS has been noted as offering Troy Murphy and Mickael Pietrus for him. I see this as being not good for Atlanta because of Murphy's contract. But this works out good for us. We can package or remaining TE (about 4.2 million) along with Luther Head (which I think may be trade bait) and make it a 3 team trade. We get Troy Murphy who is an outside shooter and a banger inside 14 ppg and 10 rpg while shooting .347 from downtown. Atlanta get's Mickael Pietrus and Head along with the TE and GS get's Al Harrington. This could be a win win for all. And with this deal done if Portland still has interest in Juwan's locker room presence maybe we trade him to them for Darius (big if here). Just an idea running around in my head. Thanks for your time.
While Banks is a very interesting prospect, I feel that he's not good enough to warrant the #1 priority for the Rockets at this point in the game. Ariza may be young, athletic, & full of potential, but he's shown no outside shot to speak of, & we have pretty good depth at the 2/3 (Battier/T-Mac/Snyder/Head/Novak/Sura?) for now. No, at this point in free agency, I'd have to shift the Rocket's #1 priority (read as, full MLE offer) to the PF position. I'd offer the full MLE to Reggie Evans first, & then to Jared Jeffries, if Evans turns us down. I'd throw a one year veteran's minimum offer at Tony Delk (PG), Jim Jackson (SG), and/or Cato (C/PF). If Sura comes back, then I won't need a backup PG. Finally, I'd match one of the offers being thrown at Lucas. At this point, getting Reggie Evans at PF would be a coup for CD. C: Yao/Mutombo/Cato PF: Evans/Howard/Hayes SF: T-Mac/Battier/Novak/Jackson SG: Battier/Snyder/Head/Jackson PG: Sura(?)/Alston/Delk(?)/Lucas Sura is the wild card. If he comes back, there'll be no need for a backup PG. Since Jackson could play some minutes at SF, Bowen would be released. I'm still intrigued by the idea of exploring the possibility of trading the $4.2 mill TE & a future 2nd round pick to New Jersey for McInnis, assuming he's healthy. Depending on how injuries & preseason performances go, 3 players will have to go on the DL to start the season.

The Orlando Magic might have found a future big man in their NBA summer league, a 6-foot-11 forward who gave up soccer four years ago. Poland's Marcin Gortat, a second-round pick last year, was impressive in his rather infant basketball career. He averaged 11 points and 6.4 rebounds in five games. Although his aggressive play was encouraging, the Magic said they think another season playing overseas will benefit Gortat more than sitting on the end of their bench. "He's improving as a player. With a little more time, he'll be ready. Our concern is that he wouldn't play enough here," Magic Coach Brian Hill said. "He has limited basketball experience. It's not like Marcin grew up in the States playing basketball forever." Gortat, 22, has one year remaining on his contract in Germany. Gortat also blocked four shots in five games, but that might have been expected: He used to play goalie for junior soccer teams in Poland. Magic assistant coach Randy Ayers said, "He was a soccer goalie, and you can see he's got great hands." Gortat has been in Orlando for the past five weeks, working with Magic assistant coach Mark Bryant. "I didn't expect to play so good," Gortat said. "Obviously, I want to play here, even I play five, 10 minutes a game. "I don't care if I don't play nine games in a row and then one. I think I'm ready for that." The Magic, however, will look to sign a veteran big man, preferably a "banger," Ayers said. Among the free-agent centers or power forwards available are Antonio Davis, Clifford Robinson, Scot Pollard, Francisco Elson, Loren Woods and Robert "Tractor" Traylor. Forward James Augustine, the club's second-round pick out of Illinois, will be in training camp in October. Augustine played in all five summer-league games, averaging 6.6 points and 5.4 rebounds. He's not physical at 6-10, 235 pounds, but Ayers called him "deceptive" and said he will benefit from work in the weight room. "I thought James got better as the week went on," Ayers said. "He's a smart player." NOTES: Magic General Manager Otis Smith is confident that restricted free-agent forward Trevor Ariza "is not going anywhere. We're going to keep him." The club can match any offer Ariza receives. Smith indicated that -- barring something astronomical -- it would. Ariza is trying to drum up a high bidder. . . . The most astounding stat? Perhaps the 1.1 million hits Orlandomagic.com received during its four-day coverage, which included a live webcast. . . . Forward Rich Melzer started on the Magic's roster and wound up on San Antonio's. Melzer played two games with Orlando before leaving camp after Spurs Coach/General Manager Gregg Popovich offered him a contract. . . . Guard Travis Diener led the Magic (3-2) in scoring, averaging 20.3 points and 6.5 assists. He sat out Friday's final game with a bruised left foot. Erik Daniels finished second on the team in scoring with an 11.4 average. Orlando beat the Miami Heat 85-70 behind Daniels' 20 points. . . . Charlotte Bobcats rookie Adam Morrison, who led Division I in scoring last season at Gonzaga, finished as the Orlando summer-league scoring champ at 24.6 points per game. Morrison scored 27 points on Friday for the Bobcats (3-2), who lost 106-93 to the Indiana Pacers (3-2). . . . Tyrus Thomas scored 22 points as the Chicago Bulls beat the New Jersey Nets 92-77. Nets guard Marcus Williams scored 27 points. . . . The Magic expect to play host to the summer league again next July. Brian Schmitz can be reached at bschmitz@orlandosentinel.com.
Lol! How about all of Jon Barry's brothers? Or even Reggie Miller's sister? Seriously, I think Wilt Chamberlain's corpse will pose a greater defensive threat that Juwan Howard.
Disregarding whether or not Atlanta would do that deal, it's not even close to working under the salary cap. You're not allowed to combine the TE with another players salary to match Murphy's salary. Even if you were, Murphy makes almost $8M and the TE + Head's salary is barely $6M.
