I think it's a bad message that Goldberg gets suspended. It's obvious she wasn't trying to mock or offend anyone but just having an intellectual debate about something else - and suspending her sends the message that you can't even have a debate about a topic that is sensitive to someone without landing you in hot water. To me, this is problematic and I would expect @Os Trigonum and @rocketsjudoka would agree.

I don't think this is comparable to Rosanne Barr though in context, but I don't think she should have had her show canceled either but ABC was forced into a corner on that one as what she posted was incredibly stupid.

A better comparison would be Mel Gibson. In that, how is it that Whoopi Goldberg gets suspended for saying Jews are not a race - a POV that many Jews would agree with, while Mel Gibson has multiple times ripped Jews apart and appears to be an actual anti-semite, yet his career does not appear to have been negatively affected.

How does he get a pass while others don't?

But overall, while I think critique is a good thing, I don't think calling for the firing or punishment of someone who says something we find offensive is a positive thing for our society.

You actually care about intent. It's a large part of right wing cancel culture "gotcha games" they play. They equivocate by removing context and intent. Whoopie's stupid comments had no ill intent. She sincerely thought it was religious perspecution rather than ethnic because she labels herself as Jewish also. There was no hate in her comments or no attempt to downplay or justify the Holocaust.

 

Exactly where as Mel Gibson has multiple times gone on anti-Semitic and racist tirades and yet no one seems to call for a boycott of his movies. It's a weird double standard and just bizarro to me.

 

I don't have any personal issue with you, not sure why you take our debates personally.

 

To be fair Gibson was frowned upon by Hollywood for a bit but then he "reformed" and is back making movies.
