According to NBA hot spots, in the immediate basket area Luis is 39-64 (61%) and Chuck is 34-58 (59%). For comparison, Yao is 95-159 (60%).

Good stat. It goes to show what I know. I was sure Chuck is better at converting around the basket than Scola.

I'm not sure about Snyder starting over Battier, but Kirk should get some minutes.

Chuch Hayes is a great guy and always hustles, but as a bball player, he's just limited in what he can do. Carl Landry looks like he might be a better version of Hayes already. There's no way that Hayes should be starting on any NBA team much less one that fancies itself as a playoff team. He should be replaced by Scola immediately.

The problem is that the Chuck is significantly better on the defensive end at this point. Some of that is because he no longer get's the "rookie" foul calls against him, and some of it is just better technique and effort. Luis is obviously a better scorer, but he goes games with only getting 1 or 2 shots. If he isn't taking 5 or more shots then the defense on every possesion out weighs the offense for now. Eventually I think Scola will get more and more time though, and if not start, then play majority minutes between the forward and back up center spots.

As for Battier, he is still our best perimeter defender. Getting "lit up" is expected when you guard the best scorer on the other team every night. The rules have changed since Gary Payton was in his prime and hand checking was legal. Now the best you can do as a perimeter defender is contest shots and try to take away the layups and favorite spots of the opponent. Make the opponent work for every point they get, and that is what Battier does. The main concern is will he shoot his career average from 3. If so then things are fine. If not, then the door opens for other players to take some of his play time.

This does not account for all the turnovers from fumbled T-Mc passes nor all the non-shots when he looked up to see a chest leaning on his head.

Last I heard he couldn't dribble with his right hand because he needed it for his cane. :)

why are these the only 2 options? I'd start Shane and Scola...that would be my ideal twosome with Chuck coming off the bench. No way would I start Snyder over Battier...I think most people underestimate how important Battier's defense (help defense in particular) is for this team.

A lot of it is strength and quickness. Chuck is incredibly strong with a low center of gravity and one of the quickest PF's in the league. That makes one of the hardest guys to post in the league and one of the best at defending the pick-and-roll. Scola really has the knowledge of the game and the heart to be a good defender, but he's much easier to post than Chuck, and he's a bit of a liability trying to trap or switch on P&R. Scola's upside defensively is that he looks like he'll be a better help defender than Chuck. He has better anticipation for taking charges and blocking shots.

I can tell how every opposing GM in the league would answer this question. Snyder and Scola

We should stick to our lineup now or start Luis Scola. Rafer Alston showed his value to the team in the last 3 game. Playing one and we win... didn't play the other two and we lost. Rafer may not be the best shooter but his role on this team is important.

Shane Battier should start always. He's our best defender, and he play smart basketball. He can shoot the threes fairly well and always have that little hook shot that he rarely use anymore.

Snyder shouldn't even be mention as a starter. He'd be lucky if he can beat Luther Head, Mike James for bench minutes. If you wanted to take Shane out... put Bonzi in. However our bench would be horrible.

    Two lineup I would suggest:

    Rafer
    TMAC
    Shane
    Hayes
    Yao

    Steve
    Mike James
    Bonzi
    Scola
Mutumbo (depending on matchup)... if not we can move Kirk into SF and move Bonzi and Scola to PF and C respectively.

    another line up:

    Rafer
    TMAC
    SHANE
    SCOLA
    YAO

    Steve
    James
    Snyder
    Bonzi
    Hayes

I'm surprised people are thinking Snyder a starter. I don't even thing he should be on the roster. He's athletic but with the talent we have, he's a trade kicker when deadline comes.

He did have a horrible night against the Pistons. He probably blew three or four layups, and had the ball pass through his hands 2 or 3 times on passes or loose balls.

I think Scola has better touch around the rim in general though.

We need Bonzi off the bench to put some buckets in with the signficant struggles of MJ and Steve, plus he would be on the court with Shane and Chuck.
