Adding Larry Brown to the mix would do better for this team than any player transaction the Rockets could realistically hope for. Everywhere Brown goes, they become good and they become good fast. He took the Clippers to the playoffs! He took one of the laughingstocks of the entire NBA, with the most selfish player in the league, to the NBA Finals! Larry Brown would do wonders arriving to a team with a winning record, and two franchise players. If you have the opportunity to acquire the greatest mind in all of basketball you don't worry about him leaving in 2 years! You hire him, watch him ressurect your franchise out of the depths of mediocrity and then worry about getting a new coach when he leaves his product of a 60 win team, and two not-yet-30 superstars. At that point, you again have your pick of the litter.

Fully agree Cabbage. Its very close for me between Brown and Van Gundy, but I do feel this team could be VERY good VERY quickly under Brown. A team in the neighborhood of 60 wins in 2 yrs would be very doable under a coach like Brown. Ive always felt that Steve Francis has the ability to be a much better player than Iverson but simply has not been used appropriately or found the proper coach to bring this out of him. Steve has 3 inches on Iverson, has a much better body frame (not the 165 pound stick that Iverson is) and has a much more consistent jump shot. A coach like Brown working him into more scoring situations would work wonders for this roster. Plus, under Brown, Yao would develop into a 20-10 beast very quickly. If you have a 20-10 frontcourt player plus a guard that puts up 26-5-5 or so, you can win a whole lot of games if you surround them with proper role players. Larry Brown is excellent at defining roles and making players work in a system.

and p*sing off players as he goes.

Ask yourself this question. Will the Rockets team with Larry Brown at the helm be a popular consideration among free agents? I bet not.

FAs wanted to play for Rudy since he was a players coach. Rudy's background as a player helped him establish relationships with his players. Of the current crop being considered, the two most popular among posters here are Brown and JVG, neither of which was a NBA player. Thus, I have my doubts about both of them.

Ask yourself another question, over the last 20 years or so how many coaches who won championships were ex-NBA players? Phil Jackson, Rudy T, Pat Riley, KC Jones. Coincidence?

My choice? Paul Silas. He has coached a mediocre team to the playoffs the last four years, twice to the second round. He gets his players to play hard and well. And he also has experience with developing younger players. For me, it is a no brainer.

Playing in the league does not mean you will have success coaching.

If you look around the league, most of the coaches have played in the NBA, therefore, they have a better chance of "coaching", Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Hakeem Olajuwon, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Larry Bird.

Its just a matter of odds. JVG and Larry Brown's best players were/are Latrell Sprewell, Allan Houston, Reggie Miller, and Allen Iverson...none can hold a candle to any of the players mentioned above.

You give Larry Brown or JVG those type of players and they easily have a championship or three.

Also, to people that think Larry Brown will "give the players discipline", go look how he lets Allen Iverson skip practices, threaten people with guns, and make "gangsta rap" albums....talk about discipline.

It has been said JVG would bring big-time ugly ball...and I am thinking that is the case...so that being said, Larry Brown seems to be the most attractive candidate...another thing that is a positive is his handling of renegade A.I., perhaps he can slap some sense into Francis and give him a better drive.
