Sources tell FOX 26 Applewhite has already been contacted by UH officials. Applewhite, 29, is currently in his first year as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at University of Alabama. He joined the Crimson Tide after spending one season as the offensive coordinator at Rice. At Rice, Applewhite was the youngest coordinator in the nation. Applewhite has also worked as the quarterbacks coach at Syracuse University. Applewhite has not returned phone calls to FOX 26 and UH Athletic Director Dave Maggard is not commenting on head coach candidates. The UH job opened when Art Briles resigned to become the new head coach at Baylor University.
I'm gonna be the next coach. Every play will be run from Field Goal formation. I tested it out on Joe Montana football.
I'd really hate for Applewhite to hone his skills here, only to leave in a few years to take over at Texas.
I guess UH is only looking at offensive masterminds eh. Gimmicky ones at that (jk)... Oh well. That was always their shtick. Live and enjoy it. Die by it.
Berman talked to Jones who said he had no interest in the UH job. That could be because his team is a win away from the BCS.
Why? Don't say because he is young and has no head coaching experience. That's why you have experienced coordinators. He will be a great recruiter. Could he fail? Sure. But you have to take the risk. I can't see another candidate that would not be a downer. Jeff Bower would be a solid hire but guess what he isn't going to sell tickets and excite the fanbase.
I hope Malzahn would not leave Tulsa. It's close to his fanbase in NW Arkansas. And if TG left, Malzahn would be the next head coach.
The most important aspect of the position is going to be fundraising. UH is bringing in a new president/chancellor and the school is going to begin a capital campaign to raise around $1 billion. Briles was terrible at raising money, hated it, didn't like rubbing elbows with big money people in a big city. In order to accomplish that lofty goal, I think it's essential that UH gets a competent gladhander in who can recruit greenbacks in addition to quarterbacks.
