Sounds like the chronicle writer was making all of this up or doing anything he could to try to stir up controversy. If this had actually happened it would have been all over the news.

This also happened when Wang Zhi-Zhi played in his first nationaly televised game. Everytime Wang scored the announcer for TNT keeped on making Kung-Fu/karate type sounds. You know the kinda sounds that non-Asians would use to mock/make fun of Asian people. As if to say that every Asian person knew martial arts. I'm talking every single time Wang scored and keeped on getting worse. I wonder if the guy ever got repremanded after that game.

Sometimes people are just too sensitive. I am Chinese and I don't feel offended if they assume every Chinese knows Kung Fu. What's wrong with that?? Heck, if people think i know kung fu, that is just cool. I'll be kicking asses!!!

As for the Dallas's commentator making fun of Yao's name, i have to listen to that to determine if it's offensive or not.

Are you just plain ignorant or are you still in grade school? Maybe you might still be FOB? Could that be it, you're FOB?

So you're Chinese? You should be ashamed of yourself!

It's a sad world when we can't make fun of each other's differences. I can't wait for a day when people's inferiorities don't get in the way of a good time.

If the Mavs do nothing, they're basically saying it's okay to use ebonics to mock Finley, Nazi reference on Dirk, and breed the next generation of Rush Limbaugh's and Jimmy the Greek's.

ummm... not sure i agree with that... AND i'm not sure that you'd want to call them inferiorities.

    "walk like a nigerian."

a gong going off in the delta center everytime yao scores a basket.

it's stupid is what it is. how idiots like that come up with those things... better yet... why these idiots get hired in the first place completely baffles me.

kinda reminds me of the time when hakeem was considering the uncle ben's rice deal until cd talked him out of it. the guy who thought "hmmm... somebody from africa would be nice to promote our product. gee... i know! how about hakeem olajuwon?!?" (their garlic/butter flavored rice is bad arse btw).

it's stupid, ignorant, and pointless to make fun of other's differences... imo.

edit: wasn't sure if your post was one of sarcasm or not.

just read the Dallas paper - they confirm everything:
    ___________________________________________

Cuban: PA announcer's approach to Yao addressed internally

Mavs deny report that Hayes mocked Yao on Saturday night

04:05 AM CST on Tuesday, February 24, 2004

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

The public-address announcer for the Mavericks has been called out for what could be construed as an ethnic inflection when saying Houston Rockets center Yao Ming's name during Saturday's game at American Airlines Center.

Yao said he did not hear the mock Chinese accent announcer Billy Hayes reportedly used more than once during the Mavericks' 97-88 win over the Rockets. Mavs owner Mark Cuban said only that "we have addressed it internally."

When pressed if a reprimand had been issued, Cuban said: "That's something we deal with internally and is nobody's business but ours. [The] press needs to know about players and coaches. Everyone else is off limits."

Yao's nationality has been a touchy issue since he came into the league last season. Even the Los Angeles Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal, as big a star as there is in the NBA, came under fire last season for jokingly using Chinese-like words to describe Yao in an interview.

Hayes could not be reached for comment. Mavericks personnel said they did not hear any irregularities in Hayes' announcing.

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson said he had not heard from the Mavericks regarding an explanation or apology.

Yao told reporters in Houston: "I didn't hear it, or I wasn't listening. If I heard it, I think I would have some thoughts. Right now, I'm not too happy."

Where in that article did they confirm anything? Can you read? What does the headline say? Mavs deny report that Hayes mocked Yao on Saturday night How do you read that and think that the Mavs confirmed everything? All the article says is that the announcer has been called out. Look at all the people in this thread that never heard the accent that emailed Cuban and called out the announcer. It is easy to see how that could have happened. It is funny how this Houston Chronicle guy is the only one to have heard this so called accent.

I meant that they confirmed there was an issue - not that it actaully happened.

The article doesn't say the Mavs deny it either. The subtitle says that, but I don't see the part of the text where it says that. When asked about it, Cuban said they were dealing with it internally, not that nothing happened. The article also mentions Dawson has heard nothing about an apology, not that there was nothing to apologize for. So, I'm left to conclude either that it did happen and Cuban doesn't want to discuss it or Eddie Sefko is writing a very biased article trying to make the Mavs look bad.

Yes I can play that game too. Dawson said that he had not heard an apology, he didn't say that he expected an apology or that there should be one. To me it sounds like the article is just addressing the Houston article. Considering that there were 20000 people in the stands and only one Houston Chronicle reporter heard it, plus the fact that Cuban's email said it never happened, plus the fact that the subtitle said that the Mavericks denied it, and I would say that the logical conclusion is that the Houston reporter was just mistaken.

Isn't this a pretty straightforward investigation? The game is TAPED for goodness sake. Whether this happened or not shouldn't be up to the collective memory of 20,000 people ---- the audio feed from the game should have the announcer.

What's even more sad is one have to make fun of other's differences to have a good time.
