I don't live in a city... I live in a little AZ town in the middle of the Mohave Desert.

No, it is documented that the Republican way is to siphon off federal tax dollars from rich, democratic states - while preaching the opposite. This has been public knowledge for years.

You're saying you don't agree with a rich state helping a poorer state? Or that it's only okay if the Democrats do it?

It's not that we begrudge them for it... it's more that we begrudge the Republicans coming out of Mississippi and similar states spend their career attacking the federal spending while having no problem taking federal handouts.

Why so much animosity against Mississippi? Mississippi is a beautiful state and a very pleasant state to live in. I personally would not like to live in a cold and filthy city like NYC.

IMO that's far better than NYC or NOLA but waaaaay to hot for most of us. I'd choose Mississippi or even northern Louisiana in a heartbeat over that kind of nihilist world. Thank goodness, I am a happy Texan who believes in cutting off all welfare money for New York, Louisiana, California etc. because Texas deserves the money like the servants in the Parable of the Talents. We produce more so we deserve more. Yessss!

Personally, I don't believe much in welfare, beyond a minimal level to keep the poor from rioting. Anything above that doesn't seem to do that much to make my life easier, especially when they are paid to the poor people in Mississippi instead of where I live. The poor rioting in Missippi or Buenos Aires don't have much of an impact on me. I don't want to pay for it, not in my tax bracket.

But I am a Democrat because I also don't believe in creationism, gay bashing, idiot GWB as President, and Abu Ghraib.

As for NYC, it's a nice enough place to live if you have the funds and can afford stuff. Otherwise, life can be a little tough. My own life in NYC is OK. It would be better if I pay less tax to support Mississippi, though.

Also, prices for things are a little high in the city becasue people get paid halfway decent wages here. I kinda wish there were more poor people here making less money so that my money goes further.

There are plenty of other nice places to live in, too. I wouldn't mind living in Pittsburgh, for example. Mississippi? Not so much.

You sound a lot like me. I'm a fiscal conservative but am more liberal socially. As much as I care for the gay friends I have, the abortion/gay marriage/etc does not affect me on a daily basis. The money does. So I have to live with that part of the Republican party so I can have what I care more about.

I don't consider AZ or the Mojave Desert to be nihilist... that is, that the world, and especially past and current human existence, is without objective meaning, purpose, comprehensible truth, or essential value.

It is a starkly beautiful place if you know where to look and within easy drives are mountains full of towering trees, natural Palm Tree stands, beautiful seeps, amazing archaeological sites, the Colorado River, Las Vegas, one of the world's largest but less known Joshua Tree forests, all kinds of critters (many of which can sting or bite you!), and wonderful sunsets.

Been there. Riding a horse with no name. Lived in Las Vegas for three years and often went trekking out that way. Just kidding about the nihilist world -- its just so....stark.

Problem is I don't trust the Republicans to be fiscally conservative, not when they have all the branches of the government.

It's true they aren't being very good conservatives right now. But I trust the Democrats even less.

If Rangel were a Republican, basso would be decrying political correctness gone amuck.

Let's just say there's a pretty good reason why the business community tend to feel more comfortable when the Whitehouse and the Congress are in different hands.
