I like White Stripes. Not only are their videos not like all the others, their songs sound different too. There is a definite classic rock feel to their music, which isn't necessarily either good or bad, but in their case I like it. They are edgy without being psuedo edgy or tired sounding like all the Sum 41, Blink 182, neo(supposedly) punk bands.
Can't argue with that. Have you seen the drummer for The Donna's? Hooo-leee Jeee-sus! Hot + good drummer = me in love.
The White Stripes are a very good band. They only get too much publicity because there is so much phony commercial crap out there that the music press is looking for any kind of music with a smidgeon of soul. I don't even think they particularly like getting as much attention as they have received, but its not their fault.
Oh yeah. I have a small Donna's poster in my office and she is by far the hottest one in the band. Other indie-rock cuties on my office wall: Meg White, Beth Orton, and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney. Well, I guess you could argue that if they don't want attention then they shouldn't play Conan for a whole week. Personally, I think it's freakin' cool that they're on all week. They did turn down an offer to appear in a Gap ad a couple of years ago.
Since Conan comes on in the middle of the night in Houston (why can't the local affiliate correct this???), I haven't seen the White Stripes appearance. Are they just a musical guest 5 nights in a row, or are they like the Max Weinberg Band and playing all the lead-in and introductory music? If it's the latter, why don't they get a band with really good musicians. The White Stripes have great energy, but having a band like Tortoise or (even better) Godspeed You Black Emperor play the lead-ins and introductions would be awesome. Not sure if they would agree to do it however.
They are the musical guest everynight this week. That's a cool idea, but nobody has heard of those bands, so they would have a hard time even getting a guest slot.
I have been listening to them for a couple of years before I ever saw a video. KTRU has been playing them for a while too. They are a good band that got real popular, so what. Don't listen to them as much as I used to though.
That's my point - what better way to expose new bands than to allow them to do the introduction and lead-in music. Seriously, does anyone here actually pay any attention to Max Weinberg or Kevin Eubanks? So it's not like the shows are risking ratings (and sponsors) by using lesser known bands. BTW, Godspeed packed the Engine Room last time they were in Houston so somebody knows who they are.
Having stood within 20 feet of this woman I can honestly say that she is much better looking in person. She just doesn't seem to be very photogenic. There are some nice photos of her in the latest Spin Magazine, though. Other than those, I haven't seen any shots that truly do her justice.
