The Jon Gruden talk baffles me and I hope it equally baffles the Texans. He won a SB, yes - but with a team Tony Dungy built. He went 45-51 after winning it, including three losing seasons and only one season of double-digit wins. Dungy's the only retired coach I'd be OK with - I think he'd serve more as a figurehead and hire top-flight, respected offensive/defensive coordinators. And I think the locker room would respect the heck out of him. Cowher's been away too long; game evolves weekly; he hasn't coached in years.
So what? They need smart, progressive coaches who are ahead of (or, at least, trending with) the constatnly evolving curve of the NFL.
Ok so he won a superbowl with a team that had already been built by dungy. We have a pretty well built team with a lot of talent and you don't think he could do the same here. Weren't you the one that thought Schaub and Kubiak could get us to the promise land
I'll take Gruden or Cowher. I think Gruden was a very good coach before he stopped coaching...but I think being able to sit back and analyze teams/games has really added to his experience. I'd take him in a second, but would prefer Cowher first. And I want to be on Hard Knocks too.
Sure - he won the SB with a team that Dungy built but couldn't get over the hump. But at the same time, the team he built also made the Superbowl that year. So he showed he could do both parts (building a team and winning a SB), oddly enough, with two different teams. I think the idea that the game evolves and changes is a legitimate concern, and from that standpoint, I think getting a top-flight coordinator or an innovative college coach is a good route. My only point with that post was that "proven winner" is a silly thing to chase, because everyone is a loser except for the retired coaches.

My votes for Lovie Smith. I like a defensive minded head coach and If we can get Sumlin as OC it would be a plus in my book.
Yeah I'm sure Sumlin will pass up multiple head coaching opportunities, as well as the one he currently has, to be an offensive coordinator.
Bill Cowher just said he would put Schaub in to start the 2nd half. He's out of the picture now for me as the next head coach. :grin:
i don't understand the sumlin love. gimmicky offenses, crap defenses, no conference championships. when johnny football and mike evans go to the nfl, texas a&m is going to be trash.
If the Texans decide to move on to another head coach, I would love for them to target either Cowher or Sumlin. I remember Cowher saying on the CBS NFL show a while back that he's not going anywhere and staying where he's at. If that's true, Sumlin looks like an intriguing choice at this point.
