That's interesting. My band was started by a guy who could really sing but then he moved to CA. Those of us left decided that we all had to sing so now everyone in the band, except for the harmonica player. After a few years we're pretty decent singers.
The two biggest bands are Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly but it goes back to The Pogues in the 1980's who started playing Irish music with more of an uptempo sound. There are a lot of Irish, or probably better Celtic punk bands in the last 10 years and seems to be a growing sub genre. Here are bands: The Pogues <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VidVx2SM6xo" frameborder="0"></iframe> Dropkick Murphys <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/x-64CaD8GXw" frameborder="0"></iframe> Flogging Molly <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pDwlGbEcJ6Y" frameborder="0"></iframe> The Young Dubliners <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/nKsmgiQb5co" frameborder="0"></iframe> The Tossers <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xV_L6T6mhRo" frameborder="0"></iframe> If you like that kind of music a good way to find out more is start a Pandora channel with one of the bands listed above. Also if you live in Houston check out The Blaggards who have pretty good sound and are starting to get some national recognition.
One of the bands I used to play with won the Houston Ernie Ball Battle of the Band and made it to the finals in LA where they finally lost a round. It still gave them the opportunity to play the Warped Tour whenever it came through Houston. Another band I used to play with got on this Disney show called "2 Hour Tour". The show took an established act and they auditioned bands for an opening act for their stop in whatever city that episode was based. Some of the artists were Christina Aguilera and 98 Degrees (Disney remember). I think Collective Soul did an episode. Houston got stuck with this Canadian pop/rock band called The Moffatts. Yeah, I'd never heard of 'em either but the pre-pubescent teenage girls loved them. My band won and as a result got some label interest. The singer couldn't take the pressure of the possibility of doing a band full time and quit after the show was filmed. I joined after the fact. Here's a clip from that show. The song is stupid but it was the most "Disney" thing they had. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VhRrePrjpcc Embedding disabled, sorry.
I am a piano player/singer working at a dueling piano bar in Austin. I've been doing piano bars for about 7 years and before that I was in a band in the College Station area for about 10 years. Lucky to make a living playing music.
If you people want to see how the old skool used to do it come on out to Rudz on Sunday, Clouded aka Clover and Project Grimm are doing a reunion show. 3 Brother's in 2 band's the Costello's are legend's in the inner loop. As close as you can get to stepping into a time-machine and going back to the 90's!!
I heard of this band, but I quit going to their shows because a few of my friends mentioned them on Facebook. I deleted them the next day.
Oh I play both. I thought you were referring to Piano Bird. Partly because it has a pretty prominent flute part, but mostly because it's one of the few Doors songs I know. I looked them up after I read your post though, and thoroughly enjoyed their music. Will listen to them more often now.
Go to youtube and find the close to 10 minute video for Traffic's "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys". You will see a guy playing the tambourine - that is Jim Capaldi who was also the band's main lyricist.
