yeah nothing ever happened under brown except probably some of the most aggressive redevelopment in downtown, metro rail, the texans, or anything else.
the metro rail was built so that we had a chance at the Olympics. Yeah, great idea...I know SO many people that really want to ride from downtown to the medical center now maybe putting one along I-10 might have actually DONE something...not to mention the businesses that failed because Main was torn up and no one could get there. I also wasn't aware that Lee Brown got the Texans here. For some strange reason, I thought it was Bob McNair and the HSA. Correct me if I am wrong. Lee Brown was a horrible, incompetent mayor and good riddance to him...I am so glad that I don't have to see his face on the billboard at the airport anymore. Though he did a great job in trying to screw taxpayers out of money with the whole city-employee pension debacle. Sorry if this seems harsh, pgabriel...not intended towards you. I just really hate Lee Brown. As far as White goes, I voted for him then moved to Dallas . He promised a lot in his campaign, but I doubt much has happened.
Having not lived permanently in Houston since the late 80's its hard for me to judge but I can tell you coming back to visit in the past few years Houston is a lot better city than when I left. I don't know if White deserves most or any of the credit but if he does then he's alright with me.
Bill White has been a great mayor. The only thing I didn't like was him trying to take my dad's pension away, but even that was resolved.
gawd, i hate that. the lights closest to you should turn green first, not the one's that are half a mile away.
well at least he didnt run the oilers out of town like bob lanier did.. or maybe that sweet land deal that welch was involved in over the IAH airport.. All crooks and SOBS if you ask me and well you did kinda.. although I like the way whites daughter drinks and drives and gets off thats pretty cool to have daddy as mayor
I remember back in the day, the lights were timed so that you could drive through downtown at about 25 mph without stopping if you went straight through. Didn't matter what street you were on or which way you were going. Now, every light on the street changes at the same time, so everyone RACES through to try and make is as far as they can before all the lights turn red again. If the lights were timed correctly, there would never be any traffic downtown.
Man...after living through Lee Brown, Bill White has been a godsend to this city. I remember the traffic nightmare that Westheimer used to be back in the day before White became mayor and they timed everything. Not to mention how every bloody freeway in the city was a tangled construction mess. I mean...what the heck, construction projects are actually getting COMPLETED! Ever since his homeless campaign the number of panhandlers on the street has gone down remarkably. At the least I'm not ashamed to take my friends to downtown these days when they come visit Houston. Sure, there are still things I'd like him to improve on ... especially with the police (and I'm not a fan of all the ticket money-grabbing either). But man, Bill White has done a heckuva job in Houston if you ask me. I'd vote for him ten times over if I could.
Here, here. And I don't understand why you would want the light closest to you to turn green first...because if there is traffic backed up at the light in front of you, then you're light turning green would exacerbate the situation. It makes more sense for the light farthest from you to turn green so the traffic ahead of you can clear.
are you serious? having the light farthest away from you change to green first exacerbates the traffic problem. when you're making a b-line from one side of downtown to the other, you want to drive as smoothly and without as much stoppage as possible. the way that happens is your immediate light change first, as your going though it, the next light should change w/o you having to brake at a pace of about 20-25 mph. the way that you suggest would require a stop and go every 4 lights. btw, i understand your reasoning. but i guess it depends on how heavy the traffic is.
If the lights were timed correctly, there wouldn't BE any traffic backed up at the light in front of you.
Well yeah if the lights were timed correctly and traffic wasn't too heavy, then having the closest light change first would make sense...but if traffic is heavy and lights are backed up it only makes the situation worse when the light closest to you changes. It would seem to make the most sense to have the traffic lights operating differently at different times of day. But no one has seemed to quite catch on to that idea, if that's possible. That's why I always get pissed getting stuck at a light on 90 or Hwy 6 during non rushhour times.
Because nobody ever makes right hand or left hand turns from the cross streets when your lights are red You have to bleed off the stopped (turned onto the your street) traffic before the moving traffic gets there or you would just stack up behind those cars before they could accelerate...hence the reverse green pattern.
