Robert Pack once dunked on a 12 foot goal. There was a guy on the Harlem Globetrotters who supposedly did the same thing.

You know Dale Davis won a slam dunk contest on a 12' goal. Has nothing to do with the post, but pretty interesting.

That's interesting that Robert Pack did that. Wasn't he short for NBA standards?

I think you can trust vertical leap stats about as much as 40 yard dash times. They are subject to some exaggeration. All the college kids allegedly having 4.1 and 4.2 40 times, when an Olympic-class time is 4.3.

I think the upper range of believability for a standing vertical jump is 42". I read a good article once stating as much, but I do not remember where (I know, that is not a very good source).

On the Michael Jordan from one inch inside the free throw line dunk, I saw an Olympic triple jumper do the dunk on TV once, but he took off from half-way between the free-throw line and the top of the key.

For the story on the Globetrotter setting a world record by dunking on a 12 foot goal, see:

Its no way in hell you can get me to believe that a guy 6'10 can get 40" inches off the floor. Take into account his arm length and how can you measure the guys hops. I would be hard pressed to find a guy 6'8 who gets 40" off the ground. If you've never seen it or been measured, a 6'8 guy with 35" vertical and standard arm length is really off the ground.

Leebigez, what 6-10 players on that last are you talking about? Those guys really do have 40 inch verticals. The reason they aren't lbetter than Carter and guys like that is because they aren't really explosive, but they've got hops.

Keon Clark, at 6'11" is the only guy on that list above 6'10" so I assume that's who leebigez was talking about. Clark is an ahletic freak considering his height and 7'4" wingspan.

I'm not sure his vert has been measured at 40" but after seeing some of the sick dunks he's done and blocks he's gone up for - it actually wouldn't surprise me.

Many people say that sick dunk over Shawn Bradley wasn't actually a dunk - but if you down load THISCLIP (right click and and "save target as") then you'll see his fingers DO actually graze the rim. Do a slow-mo during the overhead shot and you'll see what I mean.

Not that this clip is proof of any 40" vert - but the dunk was just sick and proof of his insane athleticism. He's not the player to build a team around, but as a Raptor fan I am truly sorry to see him go. Damn Stern and the new TV deal wreaking havoc with the league's finances

Gerald Wallace has a 49-inch vertical? I doubt that that's true. Where did you hear that? O, leebigez, Clark does have a 40-inch vertical. http://www.tsn.ca/magezine/F3_april_pg2.asp

Hey Reason where did you get this list of verts? The last list of verts I saw posted had Francis at 45 too, but had VC at 49,T-Mac at 44, Baron Davis at 50 in college and Kobe at 38. Please toss me a link for these verts if you have one.

    Thanks.

see what i said was close to accurate. Wallace was rumored to have a 50 inch vert, but the dunk contest proved that wrong. Jeff trapiner has hops he did a windmill in the air and then stuck his elbow in it like carter did. the verticals that guy listed are their running verticals. (know as max vertcial.)

I remember a few years ago Calvin mentioned in a nuggets rockets game that Mcdyess had the highest vertical in the league around 48". Of course that was pre-injury, pre-VC, and pre-franchise.:)

It's not really applicable, but there was an Italian volleyball player with a vert of 54 inches - now that's getting off the floor!
