The guys voting for Yao are reaching. Mo and Dream available to play the center, with Big E at the 4? Yao can't break into that lineup.

I'd go with the lineup that won our first championship:

    Smith
    Maxwell
    Horry
    Thorpe
    Olajuwon

    That was a formidable team.

John Lucas was the Rockets #1 pick (and #1 pick of the entire draft) in 1976. As a rookie he led the Rockets (along with Moses, Rudy, Calvin and Newlin) to within 1 game of the Finals.

The 1977 team was not as successful due to the Rudy/Kermit punch, and Moses only playing 59 games that year. Even without them Lucas put up great numbers (12.4 PPG, 9.4 Apg to go along with 160 steals).

John Lucas is the best point guard to ever play for the Rockets (so far)

John Lucas played 5 seasons of his 14 year career with Houston.

Even non-Rockets fans will never forget Hakeem, let alone long-term Rocket fans like a lot of the people here. He's too good to forget.

When did Moses say he can take 4 scrubs from the street and win the championship?

Lucas was a smart PG, decent shot, fair assist man, he could toss the ball inside to a big man and threw a great alley-oop but he was not an all-star caliber guard. The guy couldn't even dribble with his right.

Casell was our best PG ever until Francis.

Lets not forget that for his career, Lucas averaged less than 2 TOs while averaging over 7 assists (3.5/1 ratio). That is pretty damn good.

You mentioned Lucas' steals. Very underrated part of his game. He was a solid defender.

I think I have to go with Luke also on the all-time team. There can't be much doubt that he is the purest PG we have ever had.

Vs. Boston in the 1981 Finals.

This quote is legendary. Probably in the top 10 all-time Rocket quotes.

I guess you are talking about Cassell's career (which is still debateable) and not just as a Rocket? Cassell's best season as a Rocket:

    14.5 ppg, 4.6 apg, 3 rpg, 0.9 spg, 1.7 a/to, 44% fg, 35% 3fg

is pretty well dwarfed by Francis's best year:

    21 ppg, 6.2 apg, 6.2 rpg, 1.74 spg, 1.68 a/to, 44% fg, 35% 3fg

It wasn't until Sam's 7th year (97-98) that he put up more than (Francis's high of) 6.5 apg, and cracked 7 only in three of his 10 years in the NBA (although his a/to ratio has improved to be about a consistent 2.5). His career apg is 6.1. Beyond those three years of high assists, their stats are either similar or weighted in Francis's favor.

Francis's a/to ratio should improve with experience and maturity, which would be the last argument for any kind of superiority of Sam over Steve.
