Small forward Robert "Bobby Joe" Reid.

The guy was a key part of our '80-'81 team who lost to the cursed Celtics in the Finals in 6 games. He didn't miss a game.. averaging 36 minutes, 16 pts, 7 rbs, and 4 assists.

During our '86 Finals run... towards the end of his career, he stepped up when our PG's were out from injury and suspension to play point guard/forward, great D and help carry us to another Finals loss to the cursed Celtics in 6 games again.

The guy stepped up when it mattered.

Hey, I was being serious! ;) I loved him too.

Agreed on Jim Peterson. He was a white Otis Thorpe. :D Wonder what ever happened to him.

I loved Bobby Joe Reid, but I didn't really consider him a "role" player.

Chucky Brown was awesome. The ultimate role player -- played about every position, worked hard on defense, ran the floor and rebounded.

    Loved that guy.

Eddie Johnson. He may not have been a do-it-all workhourse, but man that guy could shoot the 3.

I couldn't agree more, especially about Cato.
But for this poll, I have to go with Chucky Brown......Who can forget the famous "Who Is Chucky Brown?" episode???:D

See, I didn't forget Mario... no way is he under-rated! Every Rockets fan knows him, knows the shot, knows he won two rings, etc...

I'm guessing that the point of this thread is the under-appreciated players, and Mario isn't one of those.

I love The Cat as much as anyone, but read the thread title - underated Rocket ROLE player.

I voted for Air Bullard, that guy was money from three point land. I also really liked Sam Mack, but he left on a sour note with me because he was askin for way too much money from anyone and no one signed him until GS after the season had already started and less for money.

Oh crap, Mario Elie too. Bullard, Elie, and Mack were some of the best 3pt shooters we ever had.

LOL, reading these responses, I'm kicking myself for leaving off some of these names: Carl Herrerra, Eddie Johnson, OT, CarLOS Rogers, etc...(I'm a sort of younger Rox fan so don't remember the '80s Rox too well like Reid, etc.)

I don't consider Super Mario too underrated, although he is a favorite of mine. Still, underrated role player doesn't include him or Horry or Cassell or (IMO) Cat. Just to clarify...

    I2K,

I was serious about Woody too.

Last I saw, Jim Pete was a color man for Timberwolve games. However, I think someone told me that he is not anymore. Hmmmmm.
