I love Yao Ming, but you guys rate him too highly.

Of course, if you're talking about market potential, then the only guy I would trade him for is Lebron.

The only reasonable candidates are big men. Shaq is too old, so the only one I would consider would be Duncan if he was locked up for 7 years.

why even discuss trading Yao Ming for anyone? 22 year old who was arguably the 2nd best center in the NBA last year and should have won rookie of the year.

maybe we do need so sign a free agent that way there is something to talk about.

Shaq's career might or might not be over in 2 years. With Shaq you have a legitimate chance at the title even if he only plays 2 more years. With Ming, it's still unclear if he will dominate the second half of this decade.

But there are 2 reasons why I would not do this trade:

    1) Shaq's remaining salary is ridiculous
    2) Yao has a bigger fan base

There are only 3 players I would trade Yao for: DUNCAN, KG, SHAQ.

    From the article above:
By the way, did you know that "Olowakandi" is the Nigerian phrase for "Joe Barry Carroll"?
Anyone care to elaborate on what this references?

I would trade him for any of the several other players in the league who are guaranteed to give you a billion+ built-in fans to whom to sell merchandise.

    ;)

The NBA *IS* a business, after all.

So when I have all that extra money-making marketing clout, I can afford to step above the luxury tax, a-la Cuban.. and be able to add other superstar pieces to the mix.

As long as teams are allowed to re-sign their own players to as much money as they can afford, the Rockets will NEVER trade Yao Ming. Yao Ming may at some point decide to leave, and ignore the money. If that's the case, so be it. But no one in the league could ever come close to approaching the marketing potential of YM.

From a business perspective, I wouldn't trade him for anybody, not even Lebron even though he's received all this hype. As popular as Lebron is in the U.S, Ming is popular in a country that holds over 1 billion people, as well as a favorable market in the U.S. That's two countries that he's appealing to, and that's one very large country that Lebron doesn't have as big a fan base with.

In terms of talent, I dunno for sure yet. Yao as has already been stated has the potential to be an all time great center in the game. I really do foresee him as a bigger, stronger version of Duncan but given the impact Duncan already is in the league, I'd trade Ming for him. I'd trade Shaq for him as well. Hell even Kobe, or McGrady. I could foresee title running line up with a backcourt of Francis/Kobe, or Francis/McGrady. I'd bet that Francis' assists numbers would sky rocket because he'd actually have a better scorer to dish to. But even then in terms of marketability, none of those guys compare to the money to be made from Ming. And while this game is about competitiveness, in the end it's really just a business and because it's a business, no one would trade Ming because of his market value.

Duncan, Kobe, T-Mac and KG are the only ones I'd return calls for.

Only Garnett. He is by far the best player in the league, and he is young. Duncan is probably worth the same in value, but he is just boring to watch. Personally, I don't think Yao touchable. Even if he doesnt become a dominate player, he brings more to the team through his marketability. Besides, his upside is way to big. I'd love to see Garnett here though.

Garnett and Duncan are the only two players I would even consider it with...and I probably wouldn't even do it then.

Yao is fun. He brought that back to basketball and to Houston. That has no value.. Even if we don't win a championship I don't care. Yao is great for the game. He's going to be the most famous player in the world pretty soon. So what if he isn't the best. Kounikova isn't the best tennis player but I like to watch her. She brings a smile to my face. I like having fun. That's what basketball was supposed to be about. I wouldn't trade Yao for anything. He's someone I enjoy rooting for. I want to see him succeed.

Not that I would trade Yao for Lebron because I wouldn't trade a potential franchise center for a guard, but how could Yao have improved Lebron's team. They went undefeated and were ranked #1 in the nation and beat some of the perrenial national power houses in high school Basketball. Oh yeah, and Yao's 22 so I hope he would do at least the same.

You don't think Yao can do the same? He could probably put up 40pts and 20 rebound like he did in China, where the pro ballers there would be atleast better than the high school kids. But just like you said, he is 22, so you can't really compare in that sense.

    -G'day-

No I think Yao would have put up unbelievable numbers, I just don't think there is any reason to make that comparison. It proves nothing.
