That is an extremely personal decision for him. I don't know that I would have the courage to do it, personally. But, I do recognize that doing it would mean a great deal to the gay community. It would essentially be their Jackie Robinson though the league at least has no rules against integrating gays as they did with blacks. I would like to see him do it but I would be concerned for his safety. At some point, someone is going to be the first. There was the first black, the first woman reporter in the locker room, etc. It is inevitable. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
if it's brady anderson, he's 37 and probably should retire soon. he's having a horrible year so far (batting .183!!!), maybe because he has his mind on other things, such as coming out of the closet? ------------------
More question(s) to ponder : 1 If he were to come out of the closet and admit his homosexuality (IF he is indeed a homosexual), what effect would that have on baseball? 2) How would it relate to allowing the first African American players into the Big Leagues? Are the analogies even remotely similar? 3) Would homosexuality in baseball ever be accepted down the road like African Americans were? ------------------ "If a nuclear bomb dropped on earth, two things would survive: roaches and David Falk." -- Kevin McHale quote courtesy of Patricia Bender's website. I think everyone here should clarify (like DOD did) that we don't KNOW it's Brady, this is pure speculation. I'm not saying he is or isn't, but he seemed somewhat sensitive to the question a fewe years ago. God forbid he reads this board. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? I am amazed people on this board really care who it is. Somebody on a baseball team is gay. Who cares?? ------------------ I hope, when they die, cartoon characters have to answer for their sins.
1. If he were to come out of the closet and admit his homosexuality (IF he is indeed a homosexual), what effect would that have on baseball? I think it would be interesting to see what effect it would have on sports in general. The league implications are pretty clear. Nothing would really happen except for the league saying, "We support him as a player," yadda, yadda. The political climate in the country is such that they wouldn't say anything derogatory in public. What would be really interesting is the effect in the clubhouse. John Salley said that it would be easier for the head of the KKK to play basketball than an openly gay man. Whoa. 2. How would it relate to allowing the first African American players into the Big Leagues? Are the analogies even remotely similar? They aren't THAT similar because there was the whole element of integration that went along with African Americans. But, it does draw a similar paralell to a player of basically a minority that is/was looked down upon by society in general openly joining the ranks of "normal" sport society. 3. Would homosexuality in baseball ever be accepted down the road like African Americans were? I'm sure that, at some point, it will be. It was only 30 years ago (or so) that homosexuality in America became thought of as having some place in American society. I mean, we have openly gay people on television and in other walks of life. I recognize that sports, with its masculine implications, will be a tougher nut to crack than say, Broadway, which seemed ripe from the beginning for openly gay people. In addition, I think lesbianism is, in some cases, almost expected in women's sports because of that same masculine persona carried by athletes. Whoever is the first to come out will get hell for it, but it will get better with time. Good questions DOD. ------------------ The internet is about the free exchange and sale of other people's ideas. - Futurama
For you to say "who cares" is actually great. I believe the same thing -- it shouldn't matter. However, the fact is that it probably will have an impact if he and others come out, too. Think about the shockwaves it could cause in the clubhouse, in several different sports (as Jeff suggested), etc. I heard an interview with Eric Davis on Jim Rome's show and Eric point-blank said it would have a major impact on baseball. He actually seemed frightened of homosexuals in that interview. lol. ------------------ "If a nuclear bomb dropped on earth, two things would survive: roaches and David Falk." -- Kevin McHale quote courtesy of Patricia Bender's website. DOD,and Rome still gives Davis crap about it. I guess that's why I like Rome. Jay, you're right. Who cares ? I don't care. If he's gay, he's gay. Heck, some people think I'm gay, and I'm certainly not. I don't have fits about it either. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? Can someone tell me what Brady Anderson did that makes it "seem possible"? I want to make sure I never do whatever it is that he did.
I would expect a similar reaction to what Martina Navratilova received in Tennis when she came out as a lesbian. First there would be major obsticles for the player, but later people would see that he is the same person that he always was. It would probably cause many other players to come out as well, after the first became more accepted. ------------------ Liberals favor using artificial means to alter the normal to a state which facilitates and justifies how irresponsible they want to be
