Maybe not the "music" that you are familiar with (instruments, songwriters, etc) but Madonna's influence on dance music is without question. I'd bet she's had more remixes of her songs than any other artist.
outlaw: agreed, however, there were people who had an influence on other dance music forms in the past century that did not effect music as a whole mainly because dance music is predominantly a commercial artform. Honestly, remixing (and I've heard quite a lot of it), in some ways, is more artistic than some of the stuff they are remixing in the first place. Madonna got remixed because her music had the right beats and she was popular, but it wasn't out of innovation. Besides, she didn't write 90% of what she recorded. I'm not knocking her, though. I actually like some of her stuff.
Trust me Manny, I KNOW what I'm missing. I'm a child of the eighties, so I'm no stranger to New Order. I never found them to be very different from the other synth-goth bands like the Cure, Japan, etc... I'm not picking on your taste in music -- there's never any right or wrong when it comes to opinions. I guess once I got past the age of 16, that stuff pretty much lost its appeal.
Okay... this is what you said. You are talking to someone who grew up in the '80s where one-hit wonders were prevalent. But, I don't think that people are going to remember Falco, M, and Toni Basil compared to New Order, Depeche Mode, or Kraftwerk. Maybe you worded it incorrectly. I don't know if Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit will be popular or influence anyone in the next 10 years...I seriously doubt it. The reason why is because they are what is popular right now. I don't think that their music will endure compared to a Miles Davis, Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, or even a Radiohead (The Bends and OK Computer Radiohead). Are you saying that New Order endures compared to Miles Davis or Pink Floyd? I think you're just a tad too high on a band that you like. The reason that I believe it's possible that Kid Rock and LB may influence future music is that they're a relatively different approach to music. The whole metal/rap mixture thing is still evolving. There are no 1980's Kid Rocks or LB's like there are New Kids on the Block or Paula Abdul's that came before N Sync and B Spears. Kid Rock has a different sound. To me he's building on Run DMC/Aerosmith, PublicEnemy/Anthrax, and Body Count type stuff. You can even through Rage Against the Machine in there because they've brought that same sound from the early 90's. Kid Rock isn't just popular, he's something a little different whether you like him or not. Of course... I could be wrong. Just because a band is popular doesn't mean that they are great, Timing. Using that logic, then every band that sells millions and millions of albums should be influencing everyone out there. And just because a particular band inspired or influenced another particular band doesn't make the first band great or even good. As has been mentioned, every artist everywhere has influences from all kinds of directions. If Mariah Carey was influenced heavily by her choir teacher does that all of a sudden make her choir teacher a great musician or even significantly influential to music? Of course not! Mariah Carey will also inspire and influence future music, therefore accomplishing what you attribute to New Order. I think you will be waiting a long time to see BSB and N Sync "influenced" bands still being talked about for years and years. Do you think that "The Macarena" by Los Del Rio is a great and influential song? Damn, it sold over 2 close to 3 million copies and was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts for over 10 freaking weeks! That has gotta mean that it is a great song, doesn't it? See you have that rock n roll don't be a sell out thing going on. Not everyone is into music to become the obscure footnote influences for future bands, some people are in it to actually make as much money as possible. Can you imagine that!
You rock Manny I was born in the 80's so my music history is very limited but New Order is one of the most influential bands ever. That's what Bono told Peter Hook (the guitarist) while visiting him in Los Angeles (according to an interview I heard). Unfortunately, Warner Bros. hasn't marketed New Order as agressively as other 80's bands in the US so very few people have heard of them. "Get Ready" is a really good album that gets no airplay here. I blast that thing all the time. Moby's also a big fan of NO. Even invited them on his Area One Festival.
Know what? I just don't give a damn about musicians I don't like. One man's favorite is another man's sh*t. Here's a rant or two: People say Britney Spears needs to change her image to appeal to an older audience so as not to be a bad influence on young girls. So Britney Spears changes her image to appeal to an older audience, and people still b**** about her. Parents are the ones who need to control what their kids do, how their kids dress, and what their kids listen to. Its fairly well-documented that she has been breaking away from her bubble-gum pop princess image, and more power to her, I say. I'll still never listen to her unless I'm watching her in a video. She's hot. Deal with it. So are a million other chicks, some of whom happen to be famous. People are attracted by fame. Fame is the sole reason ugly motherf*ckers like Steven Tyler get to sleep with Playmates and produce daughters like Liv Tyler. I grew up with Madonna, and the parallels of Madonna and Britney Spears in their early careers are impossible to ignore. I may not ever buy a Britney Spears album, but I'd never buy a Madonna album either. Here's what I really want to b**** about: The RADIO. Why oh why does the public allow radio stations to continually push the same f*cking songs down our throats for what seems like forever??? Here's a brief list of bands/songs that at one time or another I thought sounded good enough to maybe get into or at least further check out, but I never will because of the radio Nazi's. Included are several songs and bands that the radio has altogether ruined for me: Enter Sandman. I love Metallica, but I can't change the station fast enough when this one comes on. Whiskey in the Jar. My GOD. Has there ever been a worse song than this one? This song is so annoying, they should have named it "Whiskey in the Jar Jar Binks."I'd rather listen to Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam. I've never liked them, but I would have bought a CD or two for those 2-3 Pearl Jam songs I actually like. Led Zepplin. I'm ashamed of this one, but I blame KLOL. Hearing Robert Plant screech over and over again makes me want to go to the bathroom. I think KLOL has some GPS sensor in my car so that they can say, "DUDE!! 302 is in his car!!! Time to play Led Zepplin!!! AWWwwwwwwwwwwOW!!!!!" <-- that's my typed impression of my bathroom cue. Nickelback. These dudes SUCK. Is that song the ONLY DAMN SONG THEY KNOW??!!!? I can't escape it: KLOL, VH1, MTV. It's everywhere. gaagpuuke. Stained. Yet another band with promise ruined for me by KLOL, whose motto seems to be, "Rock 101KLOL! We play the same damn sh*t over and over and over and over and over. Now check our sponsor: The Energizer Bunny! Going and going and going and over and over and over......"
I don't really have a problem with Staind (I don't like their music but there are lots of artists whose music I don't like) except all their songs seem to be slow, boring, and depressing, and I swear if I hear "it's been a while" one more MFing time I may have to kill myself.
Smokey: Exactly. I was beginning to get a little worried about not hearing from someone else on New Order. Thanks. Timing: Just like I did with Ric, I could keep going on and on with you on this. However, the only thing that I'll say is let's play the waiting game and just see if Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit are still putting out albums in 10 years? Hell, New Order did an album in 2001, and as Smokey said it doesn't get any airplay here, although I guarantee you it was probably a top 10 album in England. That means that after being together for more than 20 years, New Order is still putting out albums. I doubt very seriously that Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit would do the same. However, we shall see in 10 years now, won't we?
I have an old bet with my son that bluegrass will outlast Nirvana. Do you think I chose the right side?
I hate Staind. I think the Rolling Stones are overrated. I never really liked their songs that much. Didnt Lennon say that Mick Jagger was a ****ing idiot with all his little spaz dancing moves on stage? I noticed that nobody said DMB because they are the best band ever.
The Rolling Stones are still making records. That doesn't make them GOOD records. Arguing that New Order will somehow go down in the anals of music history alongside the Beatles, Pink Floyd or Miles Davis is like saying the Yugo will go down in car history alongside the Mustang. I'm sure that in Yugoslavia, the Yugo pushed the boundries of what was capabable there when it comes to car-making but pushing the boundries there isn't the same as the rest of the world. Just the same, New Order's influence on the world of electronica and dance music may have been important, but it has not filtered beyond that scope making its influence limited at best in the world of music. I'm not saying they didn't have an impact. I'm saying that you are equating what you LIKE with what is valid and important in the long, storied history of an artfom. If you wanna argue Bach vs. Beethoven or Beatles vs. the Stones or Miles vs Diz, fine. But, New Order vs. any of those is not giving your band a fighting chance.
Jeff and Mrs. JB: Somehow this discussion has deteriorated into my thinking that New Order is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I won't deny that I enjoy listening to their music. But I brought them up because I wanted to give an example of a band that has influenced bigger bands out there like U2, for example. Also, I wanted to make a point that just because something is popular like a Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, etc. doesn't necessarily mean it's good. There is so much music out there that is worth listening to compared to what you hear on the radio. However, even I will admit that I'm not foolhardy enough to think that New Order is on the same level as the Beatles. But they are a band that should be more well-known compared to some of the stuff out there. It's all a matter of tastes and preferences. I'm not going to expect everyone out there to agree with me; however, I will discuss groups or artists that I feel are "worthy" with passion to anyone . That's all I'm trying to say. I guess I didn't do a good job in getting that point across. Sorry.
Okay, see ya in 10 years then. For the record, I didn't mean to insinuate that Kid Rock will be making successful records in 10 years, only that his music now because of it's diversion from the norm on the scene right now would influence future artists more than someone like B Spears or even Matchbox 20 who both may be entertaining but are really not breaking any new ground as far as music is concerned.
Staind to me is the worst, i think it's the guys voice that i dislike or maybe like lynus said i got tired of hearing that damn song over and over. also how friggin depressed can that guy be, and this is from someone who loves alice in chains.
How is buying an album an influence? You said I might disagree but if you explain to me how buying an album is an influence I might not.
