Dwight Howard seems to be a better blocker because he literally smacks it away. As for Yao, he taps it away lightly, so his blocks are less flamboyant compared to dwight.

Dwight Howard is not yet the best center. He commands a double team against weaker teams with weaker centers (Kings, Knicks), against good centers, he is not efficient. He cannot make layups, he cannot make accurate hook shots, he gets shut down.

There is a reason why there is only one shaq. Shaq dominated the game due to his amazing body size and strength (for a nba players) which is never seen before in NBA history. Not to mention, Shaq could at least make layups from range, and doesn't need to be right under the basket. Dwight's games is lesser to Shaq's, and consist of no post moves whatsover. So unless Dwight gets stronger or learns some new moves, his prime will not be the best of his years. Like Lebron (who also base most of his game on strength), his best years will be his young years. When they experience aging, they will not be as strong, and will lack much offensive moves.

An isolated incident is really gonna convince me.

Dwight is a lot more athletic than Yao and can get to blocked shots a lot better than Yao can. But! Yao is bigger than Dwight and commands more of a presence in the middle needing to block shots less. Dwight is a better shot blocker, imo, but I wouldn't turn down either one of them on a team.

Too bad there are not any stats for shots changed or just layups missed because somebody sees Yao's shadow...

Howard is good, Yao is better.

The real question is will Howard ever get a jumpshot, or countine to dunk everything?

Rebounding and FG% are the two most important stats in all of basketball. If you get more rebounds than your opponent and shoot a better percentage than your opponent then you're going to win 95% of the time. All this other stuff your posting is totally subjective blah blah. Even funnier that you say that to compare the two players we have to assume they're both healthy. Howard has never missed a single game in the NBA while Yao hasn't played a full season in 3 years. But let's assume they're both healthy, like we're playing Nintendo or something.

What ur sayin is not true at all. As the article has said, Yao is a much better passer n therefore he makes his teammates better, n most of the time Yao gets the ball, he passes to a open man to give them a open or easy shot..so GTFO

For the last time, Yao is the better shot blocker. He blocked a higher percentage of shots than Dwight for his career.

Based on what I saw in the olympics from Howard I wasn't to impressed, if he develops a offensive game aside from dunking he will be sick though. If I had to choose between Yao and Howard this season I take Yao, for the future it's obvious you take the younger Howard.

    true FG% > fg%

because going to the line 11 times a game and only converting 59% of those shots doesn't hurt your team or anything.

Says who? Maybe in terms of team play rebounding and FG% are the most important (you shoot a high FG% you generally win, and if you get more rebounds that generally means your opponents misses more shots meaning your defense was better).

But NOT in terms of individual play, even with big guys that generally have a high FG% and rebound well. Because rebounding can depend on how good your teammates are at rebounding. The next best rebounder on that team is probably Lewis or Turk. And Howard has such a high FG% because he takes a ridiculously low ammount of shots a game, and they are all around the basket.

I think for any player, the most important aspects of the game would be the ability to draw a double, and the ability to be flexible on offense and defense. Yao draws more doubles than Howard, and while Yao isn't as flexible on defense (his only weakness), he's far more flexible on offense because he has the post game as well as the outside game.

Also Yao only missed 2 games in his first 3 seasons in the league, so he used to be "durable." I'm still not convinced Yao is made of glass. If his injury from last season was diagnosed properly when it occured, I really doubt Yao would have missed as much time. After playing on it for a couple weeks it became much more serious. I'm expecting a relatively healthy season from Yao this year.

And there is no way Dwight will be able to avoid injuries his entire career, hes almost past due for one :(

True but on team basis. If Howard doesn't make his teammates better but yao commands constant double or tripple team, then we can't just compare two individual stats.

say what? it's not even close to compare. all those 3 guys are 2-way plays that can be both all-nba and all-nba defense.

Dwight Howard is more athletic and physical than Yao. But Yao's level of skill is far superior than Howard's. In a perfect world Yao would have both.

I dont think we'll ever see him develop a jumper, but his touch around the basket is what he really needs to work on. It's very common to see him do a nice post move, maybe a little out of control, and then just throw the ball against the glass with no semblance of finesse.

Overall, I'd say Dwight is better suited for the regular season, Yao is better suited for the playoffs. Dwight can dominate those eastern centers without breaking a sweat night in and night out, but when he faces some decent bigs who know how to defend, then the edge is gone.

Yao obviously can't withstand the physical toll as well, but I trust him to be able to get a big basket against a good defensive team, or an open shot for a teammate. The Jazz series in '07 was a disappointment in that regard, but I don't think he was close to 100 percent.

Are you saying Yao would have the same stats if he were on Orlando and they depended on him as much as they do Howard?

In reverse situations, Yao's stats would increase and Dwight's would decrease.

    Bla bla...

    Howard is this, Yao's that...

I'm sick of comparing those two.

Both have quality and bad sides, but both are OUT of the league of great centers (Olajuwon, Shaq, David Robinson, K. Abdul Jabbar etc.)
