I remember that Jeff Van Gundy said something close to this during the WCF's: "The depth that San Antonio has is incredible, look at Beno Udrih, he's their 3rd string point guard. Lots of teams would kill to have him as their backup point guard, there's quite a few teams that he would start on. There's about 25 teams in the NBA that he would either start for or be the backup for. But he doesn't really fit the Spurs system, it's not that Vaughn is better than him, it's just that Udrih doesn't fit San Antonio's system. Sometimes coaches are forced to bench better point guards and play less talented point guards because of the fit in the system the coach is trying to run." He said this when Vaughn was missing a lot of open shots against Utah. I don't know if this was a veiled reference to Spanoulis or not, but it seems that Jeff Van Gundy's "talent evaluation" if you want to call it that, is either love or hate here. Vaughn could be compared to Rafer Alston by the way. That above quote would seem to imply that Spanoulis was benched solely based on system fit. Spanoulis fits Adelman's system better than Head and especially Alston just for arguments sake.
My number crunching revealed this: 1. James should start at point guard. 2. Spanoulis should be the backup at point guard. 3. Brooks should be the third string point guard. 4. Head and Snyder should be alternating at backup shooting guard behind Wells, based on size/rebounding/defense option with Snyder, or outside shooting option with Head. 5. Rafer Alston and John Lucas III should be trade bait. So I actually conclude that what they are simply doing is looking to move Alston.
im sure vspan can run a team that wins more than 52 games. If he cant do it, guess what: HE IS WORSE THAN RAFER!!!!!!! Rafer played every game at starting pg this year and we won games, he didnt lose us games. Our offense would collapse without him. So what if rafer cant hit a jumper, neither can spanoulis. And whoever said vspan's two point shots were percentage points higher, look who he was playing against. He was lighting up scrubs! In fact he wouldnt even light them up, he would play average. JL 3 would light up scrubs. When vspan handled the ball he didnt look like he was running a team, he looked like he was playing 1 on 5 streetball. How about passing it to novak at least once in garbage time. He's standing wide open, you moron!
BB scientist you really know how to rack up useless posts in a short amount of time, i think we have the next DD on our hands.
You're essentially pulling numbers out of your ass right now. You need to reveal what you're doing so we can critique it. Just saying "I crunched numbers" isn't good enough.
My stats crunching reveales this to me: PG James/Spanoulis/Brooks SG Wells/ Head or Snyder depending on offense or defense need So I would conclude that it is a very real probability that Alston or Battier is being packaged for a PF. I suppose this is unpopular on this forum based on the majority of posts. I also get stats info that says McGrady is better at SF, and Wells at SG and Novak at SF, which leads me to think that Battier and Alston may be the package for a PF because the stats also show Battier is better at SF than PF. Take it for what you will, but there is now a much more offense oriented coach and a much more stats oriented GM running things. Morey supposedly picked up Battier based on team related plus minus stats and on bayesian equations figuring intangibles such as effects on perimeter team defense and team rebounding. Using these same sorts of very detailed and advanced stats measurements I see that Spanoulis is better than Alston, not even using Greek league stats, but actually using last year's NBA stats.
I guess I never heard your background. What numbers are you using? Rafer had a better FG%, 3Pt%, certainly a better a/t ratio, rebounds per 48, steals per 48. I'm having trouble finding an area where Span is better. Hell, he may, in fact, have the worst statistics for a guard in the entire NBA.
Sooner, I think the turnovers would have smoothed out and been reduced over time if V-Span was in a regular rotation. People forget about Luther being a turnover machine and alot of those turnovers were at crucial times during the game, but he gets a free pass cuz he can shoot 3s in JVGs flawed offensive system and V-Span can't.
Yeah, I could see that. However, in similar minutes Lucas averaged a third of the turnovers as Span. Luther had some turnovers too, but, like you said, he brought something to the table in his three point shooting and he was forced to play out of position at times. Sure JVG's offense contibuted to a lot of turnovers (i.e. force feeding the ball to Yao), but Span took it to another level.
i think we should trade luther and or snyder,v-span, and possibly a future first round for a big impact PF and or RON FREAKIN ARTEST
rafer = starter james = 6th man our starter is not expendable. a guy who has barely played ball all year and whined about his playing time without improving his game (v-span) and a clutch shooter who disappeared in the playoffs and can't play pg OR sg (head) are far more expendable. and battier isn't expendable, in fact he is near untouchable unless he's included in some big trade.
To the OP, I don't think you understand the meaning of the word "expendable". The answer to your question is Rafer Alston, and there is not even any question about it. (Followed by Spanoulis, then Battier and Head.) If you mean who is our best trade asset because of a combination of expendability and actual value to an NBA team, it would probably be Shane Battier.
This stat analysis isn't far off, Greek league is top 3 in Europe, in fact I believe it's ranked 2nd after the Spanish league and right in front of those in Italy and Russia. I think the main reason for this discrepancy and controversy is the perception of the level of game in Greece and other European countries like Spain,Russia and Italy in this bbs. All that said I believe that Spanoulis has put himself in a bad situation with his presence in the first months and doesn't want to come back. He apparently didn't do his homework to understand he's an unknown player in the US and needs to work his way up-it doesn't matter what he did in Europe. He felt betrayed and now wants out, IMO he doesn't want to play in the nba even if he's traded to another team. I believe the Rockets have realized that, that's why they have so many pg's right now, they want to keep their back covered and make a trade according to the situation.
