I read you'll got "Limelight" instead of "The Body Electric". I don't think they did that substitution all tour. So, consider yourself lucky you got one extra classic hit in addition to the ones at the end. I'm jealous as "The Body Electric" is just ho hum imo....especially when compared to "Limelight". The difference in crowd response was night and day between the songs I'm sure. "The Body Electric" is just not conducive to strong audience reaction...so maybe they wanted to get the audience more into the first set for the last show? Many of the first set songs made for a more cerebral, mellow first set imo with limited audience response. It sounds like they wanted to get more response the first set. How did you like the show? How about that three part drum solo? I liked the one Neil played before "Red Sector A". It sounded like a "Tron"-ish drum solo sound. Still not sure how he did that. I assume he was triggering the "Tron"-like sound and playing on top of it in time. I remember they had some stupid looking robot show up on the video screen with many arms and the robot had Neil's face imposed over it. Kind of funny as the intro video was making a joke that Neil is a robot and they were constructing him from parts. Someone mentioned a sound dropout on guitar during "Tom Sawyer" and Alex said into the microphone or mouthed "Your fired!" to his guitar tech. I'm sure it was a joke. We had a guitar sound drop out for a brief moment (definitely noticable) during the first song "Subdivisions" in Dallas. So, unless they fix it during the editing process for the concert DVD, they may end up using the Phoenix opener instead of Dallas. Anyway, hope you had a good time. Please give your own review as I'm curious to know how you liked it.
It's also interesting the tie-ins with the book of the same name. I should have recognized the story when I read it, though. I didn't recognize it until right at the end.
first Rush show I've missed in a long long while, but I just saw the last go round. Sorry to have missed it, I like the "classics" but would have enjoyed seeing a different mix of songs and could do without Limelight again if replaced by something I haven't seen them play 10x+
I've been a fan of RUSH for a while now and this was my first time witnessing them live. Man, these guys can play. Loved that they opened up with SUBDIVISIONS. YYZ was great as well. I got super cheap nose bleed seats at the last minute, 1st row in section 408. Great view of the guys of course, but that was it. Couldn't see the screen in the back and the sound was very disappointing at that angle. I found it to be very muddled, with no clear separation between the instruments. We sat up there for the first half of the concert. The second half we were looking for the sweet spot in terms of sound. The sound was better in the back directly facing the stage. We briefly got to sit in the lower bowl there for two songs. Visuals were really great in the second half and i loved the set list. Very cohesive set of tunes and people were getting lost in the music. The garden was an amazing track and that was the high light of my night.
I've been avoiding this thread today on purpose.... Last minute babysitting issue kept me from going...
OK, Rush in San Antonio. Well, first I had to drive from Lubbock to San Antonio- and due to running errands for my procrastinating son who has an Eagle project due next week, we didn't leave until 1 PM. I learned on the way that police radars work even when you're behind the officer, and that if you come right out and admit you were speeding rather than asking "how did you know I was speeding if I was behind you???", you can get a warning instead of a ticket. Got there at 7:45. I heard the beginning of Subdivisions playing as I walking towards the AT&T Center. I said to myself, "when we have to make that 90-minute drive next week to Midland, I'm going to play Subdivisions over and over again until my son is sick of hearing it and he'll learn- PLAN AHEAD!" We were in our seat as Subdivisions was fading out and Big Money kicked in. Big Money, Territories, Middletown Dreams, Grand Designs- this was a wet dream for a Power Windows fan and must have had other fans going "Where the **** is PASSAGE TO BANGKOK? WORKING MAN? CLOSER TO THE ******HEART?!~??? For this fan, it was crazy great. First set was great with a nice mix of mostly 80s cuts. Second set- with Clockwork and then Manhattan, Red Sector A, YYZ, and Spirit of Radio- really was the highlight- gun blast scared the s**t out of me each time (I think there was 3 of them). We could feel the flames all the way up in the Upper Prom (which is really irritating to be in because it means you're that much closer to the Spurs' championship banners- too bad the flames didn't reach up to them). Encore with Tom Sawyer and 2112? I mean, that's the best encore you can get from Rush, right? All 3 are masters of their instruments and they showed it. Geddy has to do this thing with singing now where it's almost a bit of a yelp, but I was OK with that. The guy next to me wasn't OK with it- but since he wasn't Geddy Lee, I could have given a frog's fat a** what he thought, anyway. Show was out of this world. Then there was trying to navigate the San Antonio freeways with their doesn't-make-any-sense-at-all double loops among other things. Well worth the trip.
Rush just announced some additional US tour dates...with the first one being Austin, TX. Just a heads up if any Austinites want to see Rush. The fan presale and VIP presale is actually starting in one hour at noon. Weird that they announced the dates same day as these presales start. It might be a recipe to get some great seats if you get in early as many will be caught off guard by the same day announcement and presales. After these dates, Rush will go to England/Europe and return in the summer for even more US dates (yet to be announced). These guys are touring like mad...and then they have the 40th anniversary tour next year (which is highly likely to happen). US Dates just announced: April 23: Austin, TX @ Frank Erwin Center April 26: Ft. Lauderdale, FL @ BB&T Center April 28: Orlando, FL @ Amway Center May 1: Nashville, TN @ Bridgestone Arena May 3: Raleigh, NC @ PNC Arena May 5: Virginia Beach, VA @ Farm Bureau Live At Virginia Beach May 7: Baltimore, MD @ 1st Mariner Arena May 9: Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun May 11: Atlantic City @ Etess Arena Can access fan presale site links from the tour information posted at: http://www.rushisaband.com . Rush fan presale is free but have to register I believe.
Thanks for the heads up. So many shows coming up, just bad timing for me to dish out for good tickets again, and with them coming for a 40th, I think I will have to pass on this one. I expect good reviews like Dandorotik's from those who attend.
agreed Dave. I'm sick that I missed the show last month, but it is the first time I've missed them in years so I guess I can miss one. I doubt I can swing going to Austin to see them especially with a 40th Anniversary tour coming up next.
The Rush show in Austin is a Tuesday night. Screw that if you are not already in town. Yea...I'm pretty sure Geddy or Alex was talking about a tour for the 40th almost as if it were required. I would be shocked if they didn't tour for it. They usually tour around an album release, though. I think the 30th anniversary tour...they toured around their Feedback album of covers. I wonder if they do a Feedback 2 and release it? It didn't take them long at all to record and release Feedback from what I remember.
Yea...heavy on the 80s synth era stuff....heavy on the Clockwork Angels stuff. It only gets to a few hits toward the end. But, not nearly enough hits if you are old school. I would expect the 40th tour to be more varied and include more old stuff...like the 30th tour.
Might hold off until the 40th, then. I still think of "Counterparts" and "Test for Echo" as their "new" stuff, with only a couple songs worth listening to. I think the newest album I'd realistically listen to all the way through anymore is Presto. Yes, I'm that rare semi-casual Rush fan.
maybe you seen the rock and roll hall of fame inductions on hbo, maybe you havent, if you havent this speech is really awesome i couldnt find a better quality video but it's still good looks like it wont embed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M7AEi68a20 <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7M7AEi68a20" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
