Heresy! Burn heretic, burn! Diamond Dave is a deity. As for those who can't get into Bruce, I truly understand. He's not much of a songwriter in my book and his voice....well, let's I'm amazed he hasn't blown a vocal cord. It's like nails on a chalkboard.

    THUNDER ROAD

    The screen door slams
    Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
    As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
    Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
    Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide `neath your covers
    And study your pain
    Make crosses from your lovers
    Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
    Well now I'm no hero
    That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
    Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
    Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
    Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
    Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
    oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
    Thunder Road

    Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
    And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
    >From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
    And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
    But tonight we'll be free
    All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets

They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

Thanks thegary. Springsteen is one of the greatest lyricists in rock history. Some people can't see the forest for the trees.

Pink Floyd started as a psychedelic rock band. Back in the late 60’s and early 70’s you could tell who was doing drugs by the music they were listening too. Pink Floyd, especially in their early stages, had a huge drug following. Who else would listen to Ummagumma? Those that don’t think that Pink Floyd didn’t have an early drug following are the same that think Syd Barrett never dropped acid.

Nowadays it’s different; there are a lot of non-drug users that listen to Pink Floyd. There are a lot of people that are sick of the heavily marketed music that can’t stand up on its own, and choose Pink Floyd as their alternative.

Yea, that is the problem - Syd was the only real chronic drug user in the band (I am not naive enough to think that Waters, Gilmour, etc did not do drugs but they weren't addicted like Barrett was). So because of him, many people got this perception that Floyd was this huge druggie band. And to a degree, they did do some things that made you think that like "Ummagumma" (as you pointed out but only the studio disc - not the concert disc) and "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" from the "Atom Heart Mother" album (which is my least favorite Floyd song ever).

But I think after "Dark Side of the Moon" and its huge success, they changed their philosophy but it wound up being bad because Waters became this huge roaring egomaniac (at least that is what the Gilmour fans will tell you - I, personally, think that Gilmour AND Waters were guilty for this happening). But it was during the "Animals" tour, that Waters had his infamous spitting incident which led to his idea for "The Wall". I can't find the exact site, but he said that he was sick and tired of singing these songs that he felt were so personal to a bunch of people who were interested in only getting drunk and high.

But at any rate, I took issue with droxford's post because he was making a blanket statement but you said in your post what I should have said instead of the obligatory snappy post with the rolling eyes smilie.:)

Some people don't get Frank Zappa...

    Pojama People

    Some people's hot
    Some people's cold
    Some people's not very
    Swift to behold
    Some people do it
    Some see right through it
    Some wear pyjamas
    If only they knew it

The pyjamas people are boring me to pieces
They make me feel like I am wasting my time
They all got flannel up 'n down 'em
A little trap-door back aroun' 'em
An' some cozy little *footies* on their mind

    Po-jama people!
    Po-jama people, people!
    Lawd, they make you sleepy
With the things they might say
    Po-jama people!
    Po-jama people, people!
*Mother, Mary 'n Jozuf*, wish they'd all go away!

    Po-jama people!
    It's a po-jama people special...
Take one home with you & save a dollar today
    Po-jama people!
    Po-jama people, people!
    Wrap 'em up
    Roll 'em out
Get 'em out of my way

I was going to see them and buying their records back then, mbiker, and I want to clear something up, if I may.

There wasn't a "huge drug following." Mass quantities of people were doing drugs, a whole culture ("sub-culture?" ...didn't seem so at the time) were doing drugs, all kinds of drugs, as part of their lifestyle. Pink Floyd was just one of many, many fantastic groups that this culture enjoyed stoned, when they could get it, and straight, when they could not. Floyd is a great band, but they're just one of a whole slew of great bands who toured back then and who you could see for a few bucks. I saw Floyd in the Houston Music Hall, with some friends, when they toured for Dark Side of the Moon. The tickets in the lower balconey were $3.50. It was one of the first uses of surround sound I heard and a staggeringly good concert.

    Rant over! ;)

I love me some Zappa and the Mothers
"Moving to Motana soon, gonna be a dental floss tycoon."

Someone earlier mentioned how he was underrated as a guitar player. I would have to totally agree. He was a fantastic guitar player as well as a composer and band-leader. I would even go as far as to say that I like FZ guitar work better than Jimi. I think his comical lyrics and his way of making fun of whatever was popular didnt sit well with people. Many could not see past this and wrote him off as a novelty. One of my personal favorites is the album "we're only in it for the money", his answer to Sgt. Pepper. I love the way he makes fun of the Beatles' Sgt. and the whole hippie thing. Not only does he spoof the cover but he puts them to shame musically, by creating this rich and dense album without the use of overdubs or studio manipulation, which is what Sgt. pepper is known for. FZ and the Mothers had already mastered the use of studio tricks in previous recordings, but didnt rely on them. they proved that they can make complex recordings and actually play the music live!
    Zappa Rules!

Oh and Batman, I told SG hello for you and the baby is due in Dec.

I own every Dylan album except for Street Legal and Down in the Flood...I don't dig Springsteen, either.

I have 10 Dylan CDs (including "Biograph") and I have never gotten into Springsteen, either.

Zwan. (Sorry, Manny) Besides Jimmy's drumming, there's really nothing worth listening to on their one album. Guess that's why they broke up.

Nah, it is because Billy's ego has become way too big for his britches (and this is coming from a big fan of his).:(

Before Pink Floyd began touring (thanks to Jimi Hendrix), they used to rent warehouses and throw "acid parties" Everybody would drop acid and PF would play all night long. They built up a huge following doing this.

Impressive. Even Down in the Groove? Dylan? Under the Red Sky? Live at Budokan?

You gotta get those other two. They're two of the best. Before the Flood (Down in the Flood's a song, not a record) is his best live one, IMO. And Street Legal's one of my top ten.

I'm still convinced that Roger Waters was disgusted with me during his last tour here in Houston. I had front row seats, and I could barely sit up in my seat for more than a few minutes. During Dogs I tried to stand up, and fell down on the floor, he was right in front of me, and had this look like 'You disgust me.'

But later on, he shook my hand, so maybe it was just a look of jealousy that he had no brownies!

That very well could be true in Britain, but I don't think they grabbed buses for the trans-Atlantic tours! ;)

I remember the Rice Stadium show in April 1994, the division belll tour, like it was yesterday.

there was a large psychedelic screen with moving images of blob/amoeba like objects, it was definitely a "trip" so to speak.

this was my first concert ever and I was with my girlfriend while her Dad waited in the parking lot.

the odor of mar1juana was strong to say the least.

what I liked especially was the range of ages of fans that night.
we had fifth row tickets and we were next to families, hippies, teenagers, you name it, they were there.

did anyone else catch this show, the night it rained during "Wish You Were Here?"

this may sound lame, but I may have been closest to God on that evening...

The Yeah Yeah Yeah's. I've tried sitting down and listening to a CD or 2, but I just hate the woman's voice. I usually like indie music that sounds a little off beat, Modest Mouse, The Hives, or Hot Hot Heat.

    Maybe someday, but not now.
