Uh...which one doesn't belong? Radiohead puts you to sleep?! You must have some exciting life! What are you, Evel Knievel?

The last album the biggest disappointment of last year for me. So repetitive and uninteresting, melodically and arrangementally. Meh.

Tell that to the 30 or 40 million people who bought their records.

Any "synthetic band" (boy bands, spice girls, Britney Spears, etc.) - no explanation needed.

Almost all rap from the past 15 years - It's become an endless stream of childish attention-getting. "Look at me, I have money." "Look at me, I have casual sex." "Look at me, I'm a big strong guy who can kick your ass." "Look at me, I'm a bad boy." "Look at me, I smoke, drink, do weed, and have tattoos." Usually, people who like this kind of stuff are insecure about themselves.

Strum-Strum-Strum bands (Nickelback, Linkin Park, etc.) - Ugh. How much talent does it take to pick up a guitar, throw some chords together and call it a song? I really liked that mp3 from a few months ago that had two Nickelback songs played together at once - it really showed how plain and crappy their band is.

Almost all country from the past 50 years - I'm a native Texan. I know real country and cowboys from fake. Modern country isn't much different than christina Aguilera - just a bunch of cookie-cutter crap. And most of the people who listen to it are cowboy-wannabe's.

Almost all Jazz - Too mellow to be rock. Too up-tempo to be blues. And way too cheesy to be palatable, Jazz just plain sucks. I like Jazz's father: Blues.

R&B and soul-ified singers (Beyonce Knowles, TLC, Destiny's Child, etc.) - Taking a simple song (such as national anthem) and moving up and down the musical scales like crazy trying to make it sound good delivers an opposite result.

Most all techno - Synthesizers and talented electronic artists has been eclipsed by a barrage of techno-crap. Be it trance goa, house, or whatever, there's just nothing to it.

Bob Dylan - true story: I Was surfing channels on TV one night... I came a cross a concert. The music sounded awesome! Really well-written, well-performed music. I said, "Wow! Who's this?" Then Dylan stepped up to the microphone, and it was all over. He should really never try to sing.

...Well that's just about 95% of the music that's been around for 15 years. I guess that makes me an old fart.

Note: To the guys who don't get Radiohead... Radiohead is for potheads. Potheads LOVE Radiohead. If you hear someone rant about Radiohead, then you will know that that person smokes weed. They smoke weed, and listen to Radiohead, and apparently it captures the mood well.

I post quite a bit (not as much here) on a Floyd forum and I say 2/3 of the people on there have either tried drugs once or twice in their life or not at all.

I mean how would you feel, Batman, if droxford said what he said but instead of using radiohead, he used Dylan's name?

It is highly insulting to me and anyone else who is a fan of radiohead, Floyd, Dylan, etc to be lumped in as a "druggie" or "pothead" or "stoner" or whatever just because we happen to like that band. I mean, if anyone should understand this, it should be you as I have seen you drop the hammer lately on people being insensitive to homosexuals. Yet, I guess it doesn't apply with drug users/non-drug users. Nice.

the definitive dylan moment for me is a scene from the documentary "Don't Look Back". dylan is touring england and fielding a lot of questions about his singing ability, which he answers with a derisive, defensive tone. this leads to the scene where he is partying with friends in his hotel room, and in walks donovan, eager to introduce himself and wanting to play a song for dylan. donovan has an inarguably nice voice and the song is lovely. dylan listens and then nearly rips the guitar from a startled and irritated donovan, straps down a capo and breaks into "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue", as if donovan had just rapped a challenge to his manhood. donovan's jaw drops and has a look on his face as if God had just walked in the door.

Was just joking, Manny. Didn't mean to offend. It's a little different than the gay thing to me since I don't think Floyd fans, Dylan fans, Radiohead fans, stoners or straight edge types are oppressed classes that have experienced meaningful discrimination (well, maybe stoners, but not the rest). Never heard of a Floyd fan getting his ass kicked or getting killed or refused a job for liking Floyd, for example. As such I didn't think it was a sensitive issue. I love Pink Floyd by the way. Listened to them enough when I was younger that I rarely do now, but I still think they're great.

Anyway, didn't mean to upset you. Sorry bout that.

careful where you draw the line batman.
here's the lyrics to "Castles Made of Sand ":

Down the street you can hear her scream you’re a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green
And so castles made of sand fall in the sea, eventually
A little indian brave who before he was ten,
Played wargames in the woods with his indian friends
And he built up a dream that when he grew up
He would be a fearless warrior indian cheif
Many moons past and more the dream grew strong until
Tomorrow he would sing his first warsong and fight his first battle
But something went wrong, surprise attack killed him in his sleep that night
And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually
There was a young girl, whos heart was a frown
’cause she was crippled for life,
And she couldn’t speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she could stop living,
    So she decided to die
She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore
And to her legs she smiled you won’t hurt me no more
But then a sight she’d never seen made her jump and say
Look a golden winged ship is passing my way
And it really didn’t have to stop, it just kept on going...
And so castles made of sand slips into the sea, eventually

Good story. Lemme add a little.

Donovan was an enormous fan of Dylan before that night and the song he played was a very thinly veiled paean to Mr. Tambourine Man. When he was done Dylan seemed to notice that and said, "That's a good song, man." As he sang the opening lines of Baby Blue he seemed to nod his head as if to say this is how it's done. You're right that Donovan sat in a sort of sad awe as he played.

Also Donovan didn't walk into the room -- he was already there. The guitar playing scene directly followed the hilarious broken glass in the street scene where Dylan at one point said to the angry hotel clerk, "We'll clean it up" and Donovan poked his head out the door to say in his best puppy dog voice, "I'll help you, man..." Dylan made hilarious, merciless fun of Donovan in that movie. It was almost sad.

I saw Donovan in the late eighties in the Village, by the way. He was awesome.

Smilies are your friend and they can help avoid misunderstandings.

Anyway, I appreciate the apology. Believe it or not, that is a sore point with me - everyone who likes this band is a druggie, Radiohead and Coldplay are the same band, etc. I know you met me in person and even though we didn't talk much, I think you will remember me as a "straight-as-an-arrow" guy. I have tried smoking (thought it wasn't too bad but too disgusting and expensive of a habit to keep trying) and I have taken some drinks before, so I am not a complete innocent, by no means. But I am proud that I have never tried any drugs.

But on the other hand, I think it could have helped loosen me up some - LOL.

Anyway, glad there's no hard feelings. And there ain't nothing wrong with staying straight like that.

    I'll attack a few icons.

Stevie Ray Vaughn, he's a great guitarist, I'll give him that and his stuff is not that bad, I can listen to it, don't hate it but as the title says I unlike everyone else I've ever met just can't get into it.

The Rolling Stones, they just suck

    The Beatles, Uh Boy Band?

Bruce Springsteen, born in the USA and.....?

Van Halen, What they did was cool? See DLR years.

No, Dylan wasn't a nice guy at all in that movie. If you can get past that, he was really funny in it though -- including the steady Donovan bashing.

My favorite line from that movie was when Dylan was reading a newspaper story about himself and said, "'Dylan leans back and puffs heavily on a cigarette -- he smokes about eighty a day...' Man, I'm glad I'm not me."

Best line from the sequel, Eat the Document, was a solo shot of him in the back of a limo saying, "I'm sorry for everything I've ever done and I hope to remedy it soon."

    Hey Manny

    the thing is...

I LOVE Pink Floyd. They're quite possibly one of my favorite bands of all time. But let's face facts - most Floyd fans are potheads, too.

I went to a PF concert in the Astrodome for Delicate Sound of Thunder. The whole stadium had a giant mar1juana cloud floating over the audience. Every person around me as far as I could see in every direction was smoking weed. It was like Weedfest '88. I think I was the only person there who wasn't on something. The guy behind me offered me something (don't know what it was). I declined.

There's no doubt that I'm generalizing. I'm not saying that EVERY Floyd fan is a pothead (I'm not). And I'm sure that there are some people that like Radiohead that aren't potheads.

But, to generalize, Radiohead fans are potheads.

    Just catching up...

I completely admire and respect Dylan as a writer, but he is tough to listen to. I, like rimbaud, am much more of a fan of his songs covered by other musicians. But, he was a brilliant writer.

BJ: I've never been much of a fan of Springsteen either. I really like Tunnel of Love and Born to Run, but I'm not big on the blue collar rock and roll thing. I can understand why he gets lumped in with Dylan, but they are VERY different performers and writers. I just think it was easy because of stuff like Nebraska. It wasn't really fair to Dylan or Springsteen.

One other type of music I just cannot handle is honky tonk country. Man, I just do not get stuff like Toby Keith, et al. It's like music for the dumbest common denominator.

    typical Bruce Springsteen music:

"Born in the USA, I was ... Born in the USA. Born in the USA, I was ... Born in the USA. Born in the USA, I was ... Born in the USA. Born in the USA, I was ... Born in the USA. Born in the USA, I was ... Born in the USA. Born in the USA, I was ... Born in the USA."

"Thank you, and now for my next song.."

"Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days. Glory Days."

"Whew! Thank you! All these different songs to choose! Let's play this one..."

"Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac. Pink Cadillac."
