This gets me thinking. With parity being the main force that has driven the success of the NFL, would it be in the NBA's best long-term interest to shorten their season, create a more owner-friendly CBA, and do away with 7-game series? Seems like that limiting supply and increasing the quality might drive up fan interest.
Get ready for the flames I've been saying this for years now. i'd be much more interested in the regular season if the players were more interested in it...if what they were fighting for (a playoff spot) was at a premium. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=193539
Texans. The Rockets have the disadvantage of having to win multiple seven-game series to even get to a championship series. The NFL is a shorter season and the single-game elimination playoffs actually lend themselves to "surprise" teams winning. The NBA actually does a great job of getting the best team in the West against the best team in the East in the Finals. A "fluke" win here and there does very little to affect the ultimate outcome of the Finals. List the FIVE best teams in the Western Conference. What percentage would you give the Rockets in a seven-game series with each? List the FIVE best teams in the AFC. What percentage chance would you give the Texans to win a single game against them? Texans is the only choice.
The NFL would expand to 32 games if it could based on the extra revenue it would bring in. Players can't take it though. No way the NBA will shorten playoff series.
They are about equal, outside contenders, but not favorites. Both with holes, and very talented players all up and down the rosters. DD
outside contender in the NFL = 2010 Saints 2009 Cardinals 2008 Giants 2007 Bears 2006 Seahawks by the very nature of the leagues they play in..."outside contender" finds itself in the Super Bowl nearly every season in recent history. "outside contender" maybe wins a playoff series in the NBA.
Bingo. But this is a hard argument for DD to be rational in because of his Spoiler inconsistent consistent opinion that the Rockets are a championship team this Spoiler not this year but next year.
I don't think that's a bad thing as you make it out to be. If you look at the teams that are perpetually bad in the NFL, it's because they have bad people in the FO.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. It's not a great thing. I don't think it's indicative of a championship squad.
Apparently i'm the only person left on earth who thinks the Rockets are/can be a top two team in the West this year.
DaDakota Spoiler doesn't think thinks they can be a title team Spoiler not this year but next year as well. He thinks this team is Spoiler in a transition year so they can be prepared to win it all this Spoiler next year!

Max are you kidding me? You can't just post videos of people on this BBS! Do you want the site shut down?
They can be, but like everyone is saying, it is a lot harder to advance in the playoffs in basketball. In football, anyone can win any game for the most part, so almost any team can go on a playoff run. It also doesn't help the Rockets that 2 of their best players are severely injury prone (Yao and Martin)
I disagree. I believe it's more important to have a good GM than anything else in sports. They higher the coaches (the next important thing) and then finally the players. If you have a bad GM, you generally end up with poor coaches and poor players. The best GM's have good drafts and eventually end up with championships. The draft in football is so much more important to their sport than the all other professional sport drafts combined. You CANNOT frak up a NFL draft and expect to field a championship team. In the NBA, you can build a team through free agency... you can't really do that in the NFL. Obviously you have to have talent, but if you have a excellent FO you are much more likely to find that talent. I hope that makes sense, I kinda rambled a bit.
i'm not disagreeing with any of that. i'm not saying a good GM isn't crucial. not at all what i'm saying.
How many bad coaches and bad GMs can you think of who won a title with a really talented roster? How many good coaches and good GMs can you think of who won a title without a talented roster?
If you're saying you have to meet in the middle, then i agree. I was just saying that a good GM is more likely to result in a successful team. However, I misjudged what MadMax was originally saying. It's also not quite OT, so I'll drop it.
NBA is a star driven league. One player makes a big difference. Getting that one player is difficult. Rockets don't have that player. NFL is a team game. The Texans have the stars. They just need to fill in positions and they have a large window with their stars. Texans easily unless DM pulls a star out of the hat.
