The only Lupe Tortilla that is worth a flip is the original one, near I-10 and Highway 6. The rest of them suck.
El Rey is pretty much always crowded whenever I drive by the Shepherd one. Hole in the wall? Well, maybe not entirely...but it does kind of have that "run down but crowded so must be good" feel. http://www.elreytaqueria.com/ I also like Tila's. It in no way qualifies as hole in the wall, though...actually the opposite. but just thought id throw that out there. www.tilas.com
Also La Flor Taqueria / Taqueria La Flor on Washington Ave. has excellent breakfast tacos. It's set up to where they build the tacos right in front of you depending on what you want. It looks like a shack from the street but the food is excellent Taqueria La Flor 4328 Washington Ave 77007 713.880.1981 B4-U-EAT - Taqueria La Flor <iframe width="700" height="394" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,217.7714878045988,,0,-0.9335925335496824&cbll=29.770364,-95.404883&v=1&panoid=&gl=&hl=en"></iframe><br /><small><a id="cbembedlink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?cbp=12,217.7714878045988,,0,-0.9335925335496824&cbll=29.770364,-95.404883&ll=29.770364,-95.404883&layer=c" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>

I lived in NE Portland briefly. It has of the worst Mexican food I ever tasted. At least there was a Chipotle off Broadway, like a mile away from me.
By the way... when I mentioned that the now-closed Mexicatessen was a hole-in-the-wall place, I mean it actually had holes in the walls. This is where it was (and, yeah, it looked just like that when it was open, too). <iframe width="700" height="394" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/sv?cbp=12,346.0286595542652,,0,10.986947751066753&cbll=29.828157,-95.402987&v=1&panoid=&gl=&hl=en"></iframe><br /><small><a id="cbembedlink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?cbp=12,346.0286595542652,,0,10.986947751066753&cbll=29.828157,-95.402987&ll=29.828157,-95.402987&layer=c" style="color:#0000FF;text-align:left">View Larger Map</a></small>
I've been to Taqueria Cancun a lot lately for lunch. Good place. They provide chips, and a choice of chicken or bean soup, then the entree. good price.
Head to the East End, hungry soul. We've got Mambo Parrilla, El Jardin, Don Carlos, Taqueria Los Charros, etc. You can't go wrong, especially when you may need to speak Spanish to order. You'll never go to another gringo joint again.
