I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Kurt Thomas. Kwame Brown is also decent when his head is on straight.

Yao is a very good post defender but his lack of versatility hurts a lot against mobile centers who can do more than post up.

    Howard is also very good.

Duncan used to be a great post defender but he has slipped (blame it on his injury if you like).

Despite being a clumsy clown, Kendrick Perkins is an excellent post defender.

KG is usually not a post defender because most other PFs know better than to even try. Against power Cs, KG cannot hold his own. I remember one game last season where Dwight Howard destroyed him. But KG is one of the best help defenders the NBA has ever seen.

Chuck Hayes is a marvel. Only a couple of players in the NBA can back him down and, despite his stature, he has a way of contesting shots and making them miss. I think he uses his knees to bump them.

Jason Collins used to be considered a very good post defender back in New Jersey. Is he still up there?

This isn't in any particular order:

    Kendrick Perkins
    Kurt Thomas
    Shaquille O'Neal
    Chuck Hayes
    Yao Ming
    Tim Duncan
    Kwame Brown
    Tyson Chandler
    Antonio McDyess
    Rasheed Wallace
    Joel Przybilla
    Kevin Garnett
    Dikembe Mutombo

If I were to pick one, I'd probably pick Rasheed Wallace. He's big enough to guard 5's pretty well and quick enough to guard 4's. Most of the guys I mentioned are only good guarding 5's. Chuck is a little too undersized to be picked ahead of Wallace. KG is a little to skinny to guard 5's.

i never understand the altering shots argument. if dwight can block more shots, shouldn't he be able to alter more shots too? after all, altering shots happens only when you fall short of blocking them? if you're talking strictly playing behind post defense, i don't know how shaq is not in the discussion. shaq has the bulk so you can't back him down. he also has the length to block you if you shoot straight up. and he's so wide that it's hard to spin around him. and he also sends anyone driving down the lane flying, which noone else does. his only problem is when post players face him up and try to drive around him.

I honestly believe it is Chuck Hayes if we are talking about 1 on 1 post defense. The guy is a monster down there and holds his own with anyone. He uses his body to its strengths and doesn't let anyone ever get easy baskets.

kg's too skinny to be good at backing people down anyway. if it's shaq, i'd be impressed. by the way, okafor did the same to yao the other night except that yao just turned and hitting jumpers all night.
