In America maybe. In the western world maybe. But what about the rest of the world? I think people are very loosely defining "Icons" in this thread, not to mention the limited views of an English message board dedicated an American basketball team to is bound to be very Western-centric
In terms of Global Icons, I am quite surprised these names haven't poped up yet... 1. Sylvester Stallone 2. Louis Vuitton (or the abbr. LV) 3. Ronald McDonald <- I know it's fake but this is the most famous clown and I bet just by looking into the photo, every one in the world will be able to pronounce at least his last name. I want to post Colonel Sanders too but I wonder how many actually know his name, they'd probably just call him KFC. Off topic, Dr of Dunk, I saw that you have used the word "notoriety" more than once here. I am weak in vocabs but I thought "notoriety" is a derogatory term?
I don't think it has to mean in a bad way. Here's Merriam Webster's definition : http://www.merriam-webster.com/thesaurus/notoriety Dictionary.com's definition seems to say it can be either : http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/notoriety But upon looking at other sites you may be right in that it can be fame obtained in a negative manner as well. I didn't mean it in a negative way, however. Sorry for the confusion - maybe I need another word.
^ Oh, nvm. There's nothing sorry for. I just thought the usage of certain English words could be very different in US.
Many of the people listed seem to be U.S. national icons, not globally. Angelina Jolie?! Princess Diana?! We might as well add Paris Hilton.
My mother lives in the US, and she didn't know who LeBron James was until I told her during the NBA playoffs. Obviously, she doesn't really follow sports very closely, but I think I'd still strike him off the list. He isn't that big ... yet.
Benny, Bjorn, Frida and Agnetha - aka the internationally recognizable members of the Swedish supergroup Abba Pics Below:
I'd say: Hulk Hogan: Guy has sold out wrestling events all over the world, Japan, US, Africa, etc. etc. Michael Jackson: Obv Madonna: I don't get it, but she is huge Elvis: Obv Ali
I bet you the Beatles and Elvis are very very well known almost everywhere in the world.. (not so sure in Africa). Almost everyone in Korea knows them.
Lot of names in this thread, but I wonder, are any of them as big as Michael Jackson? I think he has to be number 1.
I think if Bruce Lee had lived a little longer, his name would be just as recognizable as MJ's... people tend to forget that, not only was he a martial arts master, he was a master thinker and philosopher. His teachings could be applied to pretty much anything in the real world.
How many of his movies made any real money? He was well known, but we are talking about the man who made thriller.
