The only pseudo-celebrities I know are the ones I've played music with/opened for over the years: Brian Setzer Dwight Yoakum Elvis Costello Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Jimmie Vaughan Jonathan Richman Johnnie Johnson Marshall Crenshaw Screamin' Jay Hawkins Mick Taylor The Ventures
I've had the privilege of meeting the Balke's and Clutch and Kagy and 03 and heyp and Mango and DoD and red and rocketeer and gutter snipe and crisco kidd and Kam and Buck T and many more! Going to cc.net events is FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!
How could I forget the Clutchster? I've been quite honored to hang out with him on a few occasions. I've even been to his house once!! Kagy is not a celebrity. But I've met him and liked him.
Terry Donahue (former UCLA coach, current 49ers GM) lives a few doors down (when he is not in SF). He is a nice guy. He knows my dog's name, but not mine. John Robinson (former USC/Rams coach, current AD at UNLV?)rents a house on the other side of me a few weeks every summer. I wonder if the two of them get together when John is in town.
I've met and hung out with various celebrities, but the greatest concentration of that was when I went to Aspen Colorado to ski a few years back. I talked to : Vanna White Sugar Ray Leonard Sylvester Stallone Cindy Crawford Goldie Hawn And Saw Many others.... The best part was I was Skiing and I saw a girl wipe out, so I went to help her up......and it was Shannon Doherty ala Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed. She was a bit dazed so I went with her to a stop close to there and treated her to a hot chocalate. She seemed kinda flirty and I almost asked for her Phone number, but I think she was married at that time!
Born and raised. But I met a lot of these people when I was in college in NYC. I left one out, though. Gene Autry is my cousin, though he was disowned by the redneck side of my family for showing up at rodeos drunk.
It's been a blessing in my life to get to meet and play with some of the musicians I admire. It makes going through all of life's other BS worth it.
I know Bob Christian, fullback for the Atlanta Falcons. We went to college together and majored in Electrical Engineering. I've seen: Dennis Rodman at the Velvet Elvis in Dallas several years ago. Christopher Darden doing aerobics in Los Angelos. Funny. Sugar Ray Leonard and Hector Macho Camacho on a flight from Dallas to Chicago. Will McDonough at a Burger King at Logan airport. Walter McCarty at the Star Market in Waltham.
Warren Moon had an affair with a friend of mine. I used to live by Haywood Jeffires. Calvin Murphy is my exes next door neighbor in Sugar Land. Clyde Drexler implored my friend and I to "Shut up about my house" when he lived in Green Tee, and we tried to get him to play two on one hoops with us. My mom asked Charles Barkley who the hell he was. Shara Fryer is my mom's client, and a good family friend. I ran into Rudy T (literally) running at Rice. Dude is steady tall! He laughed at me and told me to stop showing off. edit: i used to see Jose Lima at Albertson's ALLLLL the time. Why was he always there? Workin on his fastball i guess. Monster mash in my hotel in Hawaii. I am famous. At my school.
I've met Mack Brown at the airport......my one and only plane trip. John Mackovic on the way to the Hex Rally. It was kind of cool that he actually walked up to us. Phil Gramm at a Rodeo Scholarship Reception.....damn good steak Tyrone Jones (UT tight end who made played important role in UT victory over NU earlier in the day) at Earl Campbell's celebrating. Nice group picture somewhere.
I met Noah Wyle at a party, but don't remember him at all.* My ex-stepfather was a friend of one of Archie Cambell's sons; I went to Campbell pére's house a couple of times. We used to have a couple of Archie's painting hanging in our house. Mike Eruzione signed my spin-painted frisbee at the 1982 World's Fair. I've handed Faith Hill her dry cleaning (back in 1995, before she was famous). Lots of tiny dresses, size 4. Going to school at Vanderbilt, I played basketball with a smattering of future WNBA/ABLers and one future Rocket (not Langhi). Only future Liberty and Shock Rhonda Blades knew my name, though. *The story sounds a lot better that way -- actually, we were both 11 at the time. Our moms were nurses at the same hospital (Kaiser Permanente, Hollywood). My mom says that I met him at someone's pool party.
Queen Elizabeth (I was about 6 years old and at a reception for the Queen in the American embassy in Canberra Australia) Secretary of State Dean Rusk (we pissed into a bush together ) Author Nancy Cornwall (college classmate) Govenor Evan Bayh (law school classmate) Allan Pinckett and Craig Biggio (Little League Dads)
DUDE! Fantastic list. Man, I wish I were wearing your shoes. Dang, did you have back stage passes to all the concerts I went to? Okay, my list: -Most of the cast from the movie The Firm to include Tom Cruise, Wilford Blimley, Ed Harris, Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter, and Sydney Pollack. (Tom-short, Ed-stand offish, Gene-funny, Wilford-a-hole, and Holly- I could write a page on my meeting her. I met her when she had on that red dress on (from the movie). I embarrassed myself because she was showing a lot of cleavage-heck, I'm tall and she's short...I couldn't help myself. She thought my embarrassment was funny). -The Dream and Robert Reid at Houston's airport. (if I wasn't feeling I was intruding so much, I would've gladly met the rest of the team) -Gen. Powell at Atlanta's airport -Lou Diamond Philips and the Pipe Fitters (I think it was the Pipe Fitters...whatever, it's his band and they were gigging on Beal Street) -Mikey Mantle (I servered him drinks for almost a month before my boss asked if I knew who he was. I said no, but he's awfully quiet. Then my boss told me. Another embarrassing moment. What can I say, I grew up on Okinawa) -Holly Hunter...oh, did I mention her already? RR
I used to go to school with One of the grandsons of Baron Von Trapp, from the Sound of Music, Jason Robardts son, and the son of John Sebastian, the hippie who sung at woodstock about giving his kid LSD, and later went on to write the theme song for 'Welcome Back Carter'. He (Sebastian's kid) used to really like to listen to Led Zepplin and beat the crap out of several people (myself included). I guess that's what you do to rebel when your father's a dope smokin' hippie. Oh, and James Baker yelled at me once when I clumsily explained to him how to get to a specific floor in One Shell Plaza.
Obviously these are not people I hang out with..unfortunately, but I have met them Sports: Ricky Williams Stoney Clark Tony Brackens Kevin Hardy Priest Holmes Cuttino Mobley Warren Moon Picabo Street Mickey Mantle Music: Sting Pat Benatar Jimmy Buffet Trey Anastasio (Phish) Willie Nelson Members of Widespread Panic Jerry Jeff Walker Merle Haggard Entertainment: Alan Thicke (the dad from growing pains) Bruce Willis Clint Eastwood Mariel Hemingway Probably some others along the way.
Evander Holyfield came to my school and talked and stuff my freshmen year. It is amazing to hear him talk now, from back then cause now, it's like what the hell is he mumbling about. He told us to stay in school and work hard. I don't think he mentioned stuff about abstinence. When it was question time, it was so how's your ear? I wanted to punch all those people. I wanted to ask him when he was going to fight Lennox Lewis to unify the belts. I was too chicken ****, plus i don't think the teachers would of pointed to me. Chris Issak at Blockbuster Music in 94? 95? something like that. He had an autograph session. Ryan Dierker, that's dierk's kid. he goes to my school Marvin Zindler's grandon graduated in my class with me. I've known him since sixth grade. I'm not really friends with him.
