Galis and Marciolionis are not in the hall of fame yet. But they should be within the next few years I would guess.

Yep. Spain had just two real stars at international level in all these years. Pau and Navarro. The other guys like Fernandez, San Emeterio, Reyes, Marc Gasol, Ibaka, Rubio, Calderon, Garbajosa, Mumbru, S. and B. Rodriguez, Cabezas, Jimenez, Vazquez, etc. have never been true stars at that level.

Argentina on the other hand..........Manu and Scola in their peaks were at very the top of international level, then guys like Prigioni and Sanchez that in their primes were up there also. Then a bunch of guys that were generally as good as the better role players (like Fernandez) that Spain had.........Delfino, Oberto, Nocioni and guys like that.

Then if you consider the champion caliber role players that fit a specific need, Argentina was also better. Spain only had the champion caliber role players that fit specific needs like Jimenez, B. Rodriguez, Garbajosa, Mumbru - they only had guys like that for so many years.

On the other hand, Argentina always had the champion caliber role players like L. Gutierrez, Sconochini, Montecchia, or Quinteros, and guys like that, that there were always at least 2-3 such guys on their rosters. And Argentina to be honest, has also had much better coaches as well.

So basically, you can argue what was better between the real power and driving force of those teams Pau/Navarro or Manu/Scola, but after that, Argentina always had more to work with.

For example, never during Pau's career, has Spain had a point guard like prime Prigioni or prime Sanchez.

And the level of difficulty to achieve medals in Europe and to qualify to world tournaments through Europe is exponentially higher and way beyond anything any team from the Americas has to face. Manu often takes a summer off.........no problem.

You take a summer off in European competition and Spain might not even qualify for an World Cup or Olympics, because the competition level is absolutely brutal. And winning two European championships..............it's absolutely HUGE.

People from outside Europe don't seem to understand just how huge that is in this day. Spain just has two in their whole HISTORY. Maybe that would help people grasp it. It's by far the toughest international tournament.

Olympics is an absolute cakewalk compared to it. But most people outside the US, especially Americans don't even rate or even consider it. "Just a regional qualification tournament" is how Americans see it. But the fact is that's easily THE top level international tournament in the world.

So winning two of those is absolutely huge. Especially in modern times, when Europe goes probably 15-20 deep with very good teams. Most people outside of Europe just don't grasp how hard EuroBasket is and how huge it is to be winning that thing twice.

they are legends and they've accomplished a lot (and they should probably be in the Hall) but i think Pau's FIBA case is even stronger.

I'm including club play internationally in that. Which in that regard (which is how the voting committee looks at), they would be above Pau.

    If they retired, today:

    Kobe Bryant
    Tim Duncan
    LeBron James
    Paul Pierce
    Kevin Garnett
    Steve Nash
    Chris Paul
    Dirk Nowitzki
    Ray Allen
    Dwyane Wade
    Allen Iverson
    (inactive)
    Carmelo Anthony

    Borderlines, but very likely?
    Kevin Durant
    Chris Bosh
    Dwight Howard
    Rajon Rondo
    Manu Ginobili
    Tony Parker

    Borderlines, but Maybe?
    Pau Gasol
    Shawn Marion
    Deron Williams
    Chauncey Billiups
    Grant Hill

    Not Quite, if at all:
    Rudy Gay
    Josh Smith
    Zach Randolph
(as weird as this sounds, if they win a championship or get to the Finals a few times, he could seriously have a shot, because of his numbers).
    Joe Johnson
    Ricky Rubio

    Kyle Lowry (Take that LOFs)
    Jason Terry
    Lamar Odom
    Andrew Bynum
    Danny Granger
    Jerry Stackhouse
    Monta Ellis
    Brandon Jennnings

Too Early to Tell, but on great trajectory:
    Kyrie Irving
    Kevin Love
    Russell Westbrook
    Blake Griffin
    John Wall
    Derrick Rose
    LaMarcus Aldridge
    James Harden
    Stephen Curry

    Anyone else : No.

Jason Kidd and Vince Carter. And I'd swap Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Manu to locks. Otherwise, i like that list.

    Everyone gets it.

Also people remember if you're a finals MVP or a MVP you are a lock to get in. So that would already put D.Rose in and I think it'll put Billups in as well.

It'll be interesting though, say if D.Rose is just average after the injury (I doubt it) and continues to be so for 10+ years if he'd get in...but if he comes back and play how he's always played you can lock that in because he'll have the all-star appearances as well and anything else is just bonus on top of the MVP.

Great post! I completely agree with pretty much everything except the point guard case. Calderon to me, is extremely underrated. Yes his defense is atrocious but Prigioni´s is right up there as well.

Many people don´t realize how many talented national teams are in Europe, its an awesome tournament to watch.
