i think the minimum requirement to be in "top 50" is at least 1 ring. how can a person be a "top 50" if he's never been to the "top"? that would mean john stockton, karl malone, charles barkley, reggie miller should not be included. i don't know who else is on the list who didn't win a championship. for the next 10 in "top 50":

    kobe
shaq (isn't he already on the list?)
    duncan
    ginobili
    parker

TNT to expand list of 50 greatest players

With 60 years of the NBA going in the books, TNT is biting off the NBA's "50 at 50" celebration of the greatest 50 basketball players at the 1997 All-Star Game.

As part of its All-Star weekend coverage, TNT will unveil an unofficial "Next 10" picked by its staff on Saturday. The list can include active players and ones who were snubbed last decade.

The 20 finalists include active players Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash and Gary Payton, and retired players Walt Bellamy, Adrian Dantley, Joe Dumars, Alex English, Connie Hawkins, Dennis Johnson, Bernard King, Bob Lanier, Bob McAdoo, Reggie Miller, Dennis Rodman and Dominique Wilkins.

You know, not that it matters, but if you're going to add in 10 guys - I would assume you would do it based only on the last 10 years - if you dont' want to rearragne the earlier list. Therefore McAdoo, etc are out. If you're goign to bring up guys who were omitted in 96 - then you should be able to drop guys too who probably shouldn't have made it. I guess it's TNT's prerogative and doesn't make much difference, but..

The only glaring omission I see in your list is Reggie Miller. I understand Bill Sharman was the first real outside shooter - but I think Miller just did a lot more relative to his much tougher era and was the premier SG of the 90's after MJ, as well as the greatest 3 point gunner ever. I just don't think you can leave him off - defense or no. I mean, Magic's defense was never that sweet, and Barkley - let's not even discuss it.

I'd also drop Robert Parish - good, but not great. Seriously - if you're a center on this list and you never went over 20 ppg and your name ain't Bill Russell - you're out. Walt Bellamy, Artis Gilmore, Bob Lanier - others had as good/better careers - they just weren't lucky enough to be on the Celtics.

Good calls, all. I would take Walton, Parish, and Sam Jones off the original list -- and this is coming from someone who would put Walton at center on his all time starting five.

Essentially, Reggie Miller, Bellamy, and Adrian Dantley would be in my top 60 -- but because we weren't asked to drop players from the original 50, I had to work around them.

I'm going to get a ton of crap about excluding Miller, and he's definitely making TNT's team (having you and your sister -- nice Chris Bell reference -- on the voting panel kind of helps).

although there's plenty to argue about, props to the love for the glove. to me that guy is right behind Kidd and Stocton as the best pgs of our life time and he and kidd are the only star pgs I have seen able to shut down opposing guards. you hardly ever see a great defender from the pg position who's a great offensive player.

    Kobe
    Shaq
    KG
    Duncan
    McGrady
Yao if only for further spreading basketball across the world. This guy is one of Stern's big projects, and if he continues to blossom in the way all Rockets fans are hoping then the future is bright.
    Amare
    Iverson
    Kidd
    Nash

I feel like I'm leaving someone great out, but I can't remember who.

I liked the Dennis Rodman pick, what do people think about his HOF chances? I have a bad feeling that he'll be in a bad place once that time comes around, if ever.

Duh. Lebron of course. I dunno who I'd bump off though. There are quite a few quality candidates.

what exactly is jordan's title count without pippen up to? 0 or 0?

and, as big a prick as he was here, the guy was 2nd in mvp voting the one full year jordan wasn't there, behind some guy named hakeem.

He probably deserves it, but it may take him a while. There's a lot of other players from his era that will probably make it first (Dream, Barkley, Malone, Stockton, Robinson, Ewing, etc) - as well as the fact that he doens't have a significant NCAA or international career on his resume.

Shaq had only been in the league for 4 or 5 years and hadn't won a championship yet, although he made it to the finals, only to be swept when Hakeem showed that Shaq wasn't the best center in the league yet. Don't get me wrong, I believe that you should have at least five full seasons in the league to be considered.

I don't think either Lebron or Wade should be considered. People are just too obsessed with how skilled they are and potential that they possess to win championships. Let Lebron make the playoffs first, although he should make it this year, but then again, they played their way right out of the playoffs during the 2nd half of the season in his previous two seasons. For all we know, their careers could end tomorrow with a serious injury.
