Taking a different tack, here's the original list compiled in the 1996-97 season
Now, they did the top 50 to celebrate the NBA's 50th season, - since we're 9 years later, I think we'd add 9 more guys according to their rules.

So, I'll add, based on what they've done today:

    4 no brainers:

    Tim Duncan
    Kobe Bryant
    Allen Iverson
    Reggie Miller

    5 more spots:

    I'd give them to:

    Kevin Garnett
    Jason Kidd
    Tracy McGrady
    Gary Payton
Ben Wallace (the Wes Unseld of his day)

and I'd consider: Steve Nash, Dirk Nowizitki, maybe Paul Pierce.

If I had to limit to 50 and excise players from the previous list - I'd put Duncan, Iverson, Bryant, Miller on for sure, and probably Garnett, and take out: Bill Sharman, Lenny Wilkens, Dolph Schayes, Robert Parish, and maybe James Worthy to keep from picking on the old guys too much. (sorry James, Magic made you better than you were, though you were very very good to great)

How is Reggie Miller a no-brainer ? There are a lot more players better than Reggie.

There are other old timers to think of. Like Bob Macadoo, Alex English, Walt Bellamy, Joe Dumars, and of course Dominique !!!

Amare shouldnt be up for consideration yet, he's a nasty player but Steve Nash is the one who makes him look so good. Phoenix would have a much harder time winning without Nash than without Amare. Thats already been proven.

I don't think so. Reggie was a great player and has the numbers to prove it. Reggie was one of the great pure, shooters to ever play the game, is 12th on the all time scoring list, is the all time 3-point leader (and shot nearly 40% from behind the arc while doing it), and simply just played at a high level for many years and has legions of All-NBA and All-Star appearances to his credit(including after 96-97 when they made the list, AND was one of the greatest free throw shooters of all time - he's also one of the most durable players ever and is up among the alltime minutes played leaders.

To top that off, he was a magnificent clutch player who provided the NBA with a slew of classic playoff moments (I will NEVER for get his 8 points in 6 seconds vs. NY, never ever ever, that might be the most memorable moment for me that season - and that was when the Rockets won their second title!).

I'm not saying anything about those guys before him who didn't make it, but if there's anybody since who's retired and proven themselves worthy of the top 50 (or 59) - Reggie simply MUST be included. (You must recall that the list was made back in 96-97 - Reggie played for 8 more years after that).

The guys you noted are of course worthy candidates, but that shouldn't take away from Reggie's accomplishments, which are significant.

you put amare, lebron, and wade over t-mac and dirk? some people have some crazy short-term memory.

wade has played three seasons and this is the only one where you can make a case that's hes been better then t-mac. dirk's been just as good as wade for alot longer and i hate dirk.

lebron has never played a playoff game and hasn't been as good as t-mac or dirk for nearly as long as them.

if you've played less then 5 years you're not one of the 60 greatest players of all time.

i was meaning he should easily be there by the end of his career. thought that was what we were talking about.

also, i'm assuming t-mac will not have a very long career with his back problems, thus making him a more difficult addition to the list.

Players who have done enough to be there for sure (BTW, I think Shaq should be on this list rather than on the first. He hadn't done enough to deserve it at that time):

Dominique Wilkens (has to include him after the the first snub)
    Reggie Miller
    Tim Duncan
    Allen Iverson
    Kobe Bryant
    Jason Kidd

Players I am sure will deserve it after a few more years:

    Kevin Garnett
    Tracy McGrady
    LeBron James

Players who are likely to be on:

    Steve Nash
    Dwayne Wade
    Amare Stoudemire
    Gary Payton
    Dirk Nowitzki

Players who might be on if they develop:
    Yao Ming
    Chris Paul
    Dwight Howard
    Emake Okafor

    Here is the actual ballot:

14 TNT guys will vote on the next ten.

SI.com's list will be up on Monday. I'm putting it together, and I'm in a lose-lose-lose-lose situation. Too many deserving players.

He did get them to 50+ wins and the second round of the playoffs without Jordan. Who was the second best player on that team?? Kucok??

This is probably the best list I've seen so far. Though you can't include 'nique really just cause he was left off before. So he's not gonna suddenly be included at the expense of a young player. And I disagree with Reggie Miller--I think he should be down at the Gary Payton level. They're similar to me.

Oh, and Okafor will never make it that high..

Kevin Garnett won a league MVP award... honestly, that makes you a lock more than anyone else (I don't think a past MVP award winner isn't on the top 50).
