I'm like you in that I like the bands I grew up listening to and I don't really have the desire to go explore every single indie band that gets mentioned on this website. The musical cynic in me thinks that the reason half the people like these bands is just because they get off to the fact that no one else has ever heard of them, but that's just me. That being said, there are a few bbs "it" bands that I actually really like. Arcade Fire (look for their fans to abandon them soon, since they just won a Grammy) Interpol Explosions in the Sky Mogwai The last 2 don't have vocalists, so not sure if that's your thing or not. But I really like both of them.
Incredibly mainstream, I know, but here's a large portion of my 2000s iPod playlist. The Killers Muse Linkin Park Queens Of The Stone Age Kanye West
dando, The problem is that classic rock stations have been very reluctant, IMO, to play anything that is not from the 60s or 70s. I have heard a couple of times, but not a whole lot, stuff from U2 and maybe from R.E.M. Oh and I hear from time to time something by Nirvana and Pearl Jam and that is it. We are going to have to let some more time pass before we start hearing music of the '00s on classic rock radio stations. But another huge problem with all of this is look at the groups that have been mentioned - they all fall into some genre: Post Punk Revival - Interpol, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand Alternative Country (and now Experimental) - Wilco, Son Volt Freak Folk - Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear Garage Rock - The Strokes, The White Stripes Nu-Gaze - M83, Sigur Ros You get the point - "classic rock" just isn't a priority these days. The new alternative is really indie and they all have multiple fields/genres they fall into. Some of my favorites include: Radiohead Wilco Animal Collective Deerhunter Interpol The Killers Bloc Party Sigur Ros Muse The Strokes Arcade Fire Blonde Redhead The Flaming Lips (yes they have been around for a while but they are still putting out great music) Beck Coldplay TV on the Radio Manic Street Preachers (another band that has been around for a long time but still putting out quality music) Grizzly Bear M83 Asobi Seksu Engineers Ulrich Schnauss Honestly, it is always good, IMO, to check out what is going on in Britains's music scene. Some of the most consistent and thrilling music is music put out by British groups (like the MSPs).
Someone cue the song from Sesame Street on "one of these are doing their own thing, can you tell which one?"
I would go older with the National. Alligator is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. "I'm a birthday candle in a circle of black girls. God is on my side." I like the Arctic Monkeys a lot. The Black Keys also.
Foo Fighters have been around since '95. Everlong off the colour and shape helped make 'em Elite so idk about 2,000
The New Pornographers would definitely be one. In terms of multiple highly critically acclaimed albums they’d be right up there in the top group. Neko Case as well. Here’s a list of all the Pazz & Jop critic’s polls for the 2000s which should give you a good overview. http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/village2000.htm
Destroyer is also a spin-off from them. I saw the New Pornographers in November and they were awesome.
TV on the Radio, in my opinion, has been the best band of the millennium to this point. Spoiler <object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Er4fw5HJUC0?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Er4fw5HJUC0?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="390"></embed></object> And the rest of the top 10 who have been consistently good (at least three great albums since 2000): Arcade Fire Drive-by Truckers Spoon New Pornographers Animal Collective Sigur Ros LCD Soundsystem The National White Stripes
the musical lover in me thinks that people just like what they listen to. If you looked around just in Houston, there is a wealth of really good music being put out right now. It's too bad that people will overlook this because they are too worried about being label a hipster. not really directed at you personally ima...just the mentality. Dandorotik: Most of the bands I can think of have already been mentioned, but I'd have to say, one of the better bands overall since 2000 is Modest Mouse.
The reason I posted my list, as incredibly uncool as Manny Ramirez might think it is, is that every other artist he listed from the 80s/90s are bands that I listen to on a regular basis. I figured his interest possibly matched up with some of mine, so I listed my most listened to artists, who (I believe) all originated since 2000. Foo Fighters, Blink182, etc are all mid to late 90s, but I'd have included those as well if he hadn't already mentioned them. Not that I don't listen to some of the stuff the rest of you do. moes19 has influenced what I'll try out, cause about 75% of the time, something he'll suggest is something I wouldn't mind throwing on my iPod. He's got douchebag hipster written all over him. I'm sure it pains him when I follow up something he suggested with Crawling In My Skin.
Thrice tops the list for me with Vhiessu. then in no particular order: -the used (first album) -finch (first album) -glassjaw -coheed and cambria
