I've noticed that NBA fans are obsessed with hyperbole. Either a guy is the "next coming" of some superstar of old, or he's hot garbage that needs to be cut from the team immediately. However, there is obviously an order of players that do not fit into either of those categories: the players who are serviceable, dependable, and consistent; the kind of player everyone would theoretically want to have on their team, but not every fan really notices or even cares about.

Because NBA fans so seldom talk about or even mention who they think these players are, I was wondering if some of you could throw out a few names so we can all see how we, as fans, evaluate these players.

    Mostly veterans with limited upside.

    Steve Novak is one.

Manu Ginobili is better than Parker when both are healthy.

I would say Trevor Ariza is basically the definition of this player. Chandler Parsons too.

thing is he is an exceptionally talented shooter, but he'd fit that mould for me

To me Novak is not even an average player. He is way too limited.

Usually players who can be effective without the ball in their hands
Most of the spurs, most of Indiana
    Shooters
    Defensive specialists

The worst thing a player can be is a player who needs the ball in their hands and can score for themselve (and cannot do much else) but aren't good enough to lead the team to a play off spot, they can only be usefull as a sixth man role, spark of the bench for a championship contender(JR smith, Crawford, Lin, Gay).

They usually get a big contract, but they cannot bring you a championship, and they do not match well with a ball dominant superstar.

I always felt that Andre Miller was the epitome of "above average" player, personally.
