White man can jump!!

    So your saying that if a 5'7'' guy is really good at jumps, he can dunk on a 10' rim?

    About how long does it take to train to this level? A year?

    To add to what Lee said....

    Non-aerobic work for jumping is the best, because jumping is not aerobic. You have to work on explosive exercises. Like say you do squats do a lighter weight, but do them fast and do about 20 reps or so. Don't do heavy weights till exhaustion, but do lighter weights with more reps at a quick pace. You know what I mean? For jumping its all about explosion. I remember my jumping was the best when I was a goalie playing soccer. If anyone has ever done goalie training for soccer it is not for the weak...I know yall are probably laughing right now. But when I left training I was bruised with strawberries on both sides from diving, and that is with wearing padded shorts. But what that training comprised of was a lot of quick actions and being on your toes to get to the ball ASAP and jumping to the ball and stuff like that over and over and over again. Anyhow, that kind of training is hard to do on your own unless you have amazing drive to want to do it.

    Also, another good exercise is just jumping in your room or anywhere in a squat type motion. Get into a squat position and explode up and jump as high as you can and do that over and over making sure you use all of your legs.

    Dont forget genetics. Some people just have higher ceilings then others.. ala spudd webb. I am 5'7'', I could train forever and know I still will never be able to dunk.

    I don't *think* we disagree, but going back to what pgabriel was pointing out....just because somebody is 6'6" (or whatever) DOES NOT mean they can 'dunk like that', or like Vince Carter, et al. Height and vert are mutually exclusive. All guys 6'6" should be able to throw it down. Now, think about this...not all dunkers are created equal. Hence, Bruce Bowen isn't the dunker, nor has the vert, of a Vince Carter. Rip Hamilton can't dunk like Kobe. Smush Parker is definitely not Steve Francis.....You get the idea. It is flawed logic to say 'uh...if I wuz 6'6", I could dunk just like they can'...umm.....probably not. *Unless*, however, you too possess the same hops that said player possesses. Anything less than that, and you are taking off closer to the bucket on your dunk attempts, you are not getting the air they are on your attempts, and your hangtime will be sorely lacking compared to theirs. The only common denominator will be the fact that, yes, you are dunking. However, there is a *reason* why not all 6'3" guys don't get up like Franchise. That reason is vert. Same thing with the Canadian. Not every player his height has his vert. Simple as that.

    Air intake also helps in explosion. Whenever you get ready to jump, you inhale and intake air. How many players with big stomachs have you seen rise up? Those track guys are some of the highest jumpingguys I've ever seen. Or also look at those 5'7 cornerbacks who can dunk the ball with ease. Its all about leg power and strength.

    Im 6'3 and I got around a 30", 32" vert.
    I can pull off some nice dunks.
