i'm sorry, Jeff. you're just in the wrong forum. your post was much too civilized and didn't have Jim Rome-esque quality to it at all. as such, i will ask you to refrain from thoughtful commentary.

According to DART, DART Rail ridership was 13.7 million trip-rides in 2002. The increase in rail (from just over 12 million in 2001) partially offset a 10.5% decrease in bus ridership in the DART system. There were another 2 million rides on the Trinity Railway Express.

And, keep in mind, the reportedly very successful DART stations in Plano didn't open until late 2002.

The Parker Rd. station in Plano reportedly serves roughly 2,500 commuters per weekday, a number DART didn't expect to be reached until 2010. That was right after the station opened, though. I don't know if that level of ridership has continued (there was a newness factor to it).

Supposedly, the operating expenses for DART rail is lower per passenger mile than the DART bus service, though that doesn't include the roughly $20 million per mile it has cost to build the latest expansions.

So, I guess it's successful. It's hard to find much bad news about it right now, though two years ago, there was much talk about the failure of rail. Of course, we don't know what the future holds.

WOW. Do you take this same approach when you go shopping at the mall? Fiscal irresponsibility.

    Read his very next sentence.

From my various personal conversations with Jeff, I know he is a very financially responsible person when it comes to his personal life.

Is TJ a member of DeLay's staff? A Karl Rove employee? Da-yumn.

Which is worse --- funding a modern infrastructure and transportation system? Or leaving us with this too-tragic-for-words highway system that keeps Houstonians gridlocked and pissed-off and exacerbates an already horrendous pollution problem?

If I still lived in Houston, I would be FOR a metro rail system. Saying "just buy them a BMW" is quite funny, but flawed in many ways, even from a financial standpoint, as T_J must obviously know :).

Clearly, I do. That's why I live in a half-million dollar home, drive a Bentley and eat nothing but the finest cheese and scones. :p

As RM95 pointed out, we just view governmen differently. If a government body completely ignores the will of the people for the sake of financial safety, I view that as governmental irresponsibility. That is why we have a representative democracy and not a board of directors.

So when the will of the people is to ride unicorns to work, I guess we should devote billions of tax payer dollars to making that happen. You can *not* ignore the costs of a project. I can't believe I have to explain this.

So, dramatic. "Oh, how dreadfully scandalous!" :)

It's not worth arguing with you, TJ. I'm not intersted in histronics or dramatics. That is your realm. I'll leave you to it.

It never is, since common sense is something that is not on his radar screen.

Jeff, your analysis is woefully incomplete. Where is your cost estimate?

Interesting how you accuse someone else of incomplete analysis, whereas you didn't once consider revenues from the rail line.

    He has already addressed this,

It's just welfare for the underclasses, therefore, the city is just going to give it away.

Please enlighten us, Major, on how you believe the revenues from the line will:

    1) Pay for operating expenses
    2) Help recoup the capital investment

I'm looking forward to this analysis.
